Korner by
Pres. Ken Dell
We
are moving along towards an interesting, exciting (?) Spring/Summer
with a lot of things to accomplish and a lot of work to do.
Dave Maloney is doing a yeoman's job of continuing the dialogue
with downtown on a possible merger of our two clubs. He’ll
keep the committee and the rest of us posted as thing move
forward. Phil Pople really needs your help with ticket sales,
especially for the Art Auction. We all need to call a few
friends and acquaintances and tell them about this. We can’t
sell tickets if YOU don’t ask anyone. This project needs
to have 150 to 175 or more people in attendance to generate
a “good” profit. You can’t grouse about
a project not being suited to our club if you don’t
help. Please try.
Eric
needs your help too with membership. How many of you have
at least talked up Kiwanis with anyone? If you don’t
act enthused how can you expect to interest someone? You like
being here for whatever reasons so pass it along!
4H
Therapeutic Riding will be starting this month and I really
look forward to working with the kids. Come out and watch
if nothing else and see some kids smile because a lot of them
do not have a lot to smile about.
Remember
to come to the meetings, I’m embarrassed when Patrick,
who is doing a great job, gets great speakers here and only
13 or 14 people show up. If you are having a problem with
someone or something we are doing, please talk to me, especially
if you think it’s me <g>. Don’t stop coming
because if you 1) don’t come and 2) don’t tell
us why then our club will be in extremely bad shape. It’s
like cutting off your nose to spite your face. We are all
adults with diverse thoughts and interests and cannot expect
to be pleased with everything all the time. Remember, our
#1 Priority is to work with and help the children of the world.
It takes you to enable us to get there. ‘Till next time,
Ken. |
The
Mount's Mike Hardisky Calls "Foul!" -
Jim Krysiek
As members know,
we have worked Men's and Women's home basketball games at
the Mount's Knott Arena for the past three seasons. This past
season (2004-2005) you might say that Mike Hardisky has called
us for a foul. Our club finally received payment for the games
worked since November 2004. However, instead of a check for
approximately $4,500, Mike directed Mount St. Mary's to pay
us only about a third of this figure. Phil Pople brought this
to the attention of Jim Krysiek, and Jim telephoned Mike Hardisky
to find out what had happened. Hardisky told Krysiek that
the Mount was expecting our club to provide 16-18 people for
every Men's game and 3-4 people for every Women's date. "We
didn't get this," Mike observed. Thus, he reduced our
payment for 2004-2005. According to Krysiek, Hardisky never
said anything to him during the season about prorating our
payment based on the number of workers we put in the arena
per game. Nevertheless, Krysiek concedes that he can understand
Hardisky's action. "How many people it really takes to
work a men's or women's game is not the issue here. The Mount
had expectations and we failed to meet them. I wish Mike had
spoken to one of us about his concerns while the season was
in progress, but he didn't. Maybe he felt that we'd quit on
him mid-season." Will there be a next season with Suburban
Frederick? "Hardisky did not say anything about next
year," reported Krysiek. "Assuming that Mike Hardisky
is willing to put us back into red jackets for 2005-2006,"
Jim observed, "the club needs to talk seriously about
next year if we expect to receive full payment for the games
that we work. We'll need to meet Mike's expectations, and
not try to get by game after game with fewer people than the
Mount wants in order to make ushers visible and accessible
to the fans. We tried partnering with Circle K and the Frederick
Club, but even with this, it proved impossible this season
to compensate for our club's declining membership."

Middletown
Middle School Builders Club Update - Linda
Caron, Advisor
I
wanted to let you know what the Middletown Middle School Builders
Club has been up to lately. We have 35 students in our group
at this time. We try to meet every Thursday after school from
3:15-4:15. So far this year we have raised $400.00 for UNICEF
to help the Tsunami victims, we held a service learning fair
that allowed different volunteer organizations in the area
to come and share information about how our students could
volunteer their time (i.e., Frederick Memorial Hospital, Volunteer
Frederick, Special Olympics, Middletown Food Bank, and others),
"blankets for soldiers" where we made cheerful fabric
squares and sewed them together in order to make a blanket
to give it to a soldier who is recuperating at Walter Reed
Medical Center,
we are scheduled to participate in the Potomac Clean-up on
April 2nd at the Antietam Battlefield (students will clean
up trash and do any other odd jobs needed), in May we will
be participating in a program called "Bowl for Kids"
where students will bowl and at the same time raise money
for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Frederick, and we will be
making cards to send over to the soldiers in Iraq to brighten
up their day. I
will let you know of any other activities we do in the future. |
