As
April is now upon us, I guess Spring is officially here!
I was visiting some co-workers a bit farther South last
week in Annapolis and the flowers and trees seemed to be
in full
bloom down there. They say April showers bring May flowers.
As I write this article, there is a tornado watch in the
area. I guess that is included in the ‘showers’ category,
using Maryland’s own special definitions. Try to stay
dry and enjoy the new growth of the season!
Our
club had a busy month in regards to our programs. We started
the month by reviewing our history and ended it with
celebrating our future! Thanks to Dave Maloney for setting
up the presenters this month! We were intrigued with the
information and resources about local archaeology that
Ron Marvin (right) provided us. Ron is Site Manager at
the Roger Brooke Taney House in Frederick.
The
next week our club was provided with many different
and
interesting
local
artifacts from the Historical Society of Frederick County
librarian Marie Washburn. She even offered
kudos
to our
own Dave
Maloney for his support with scanning the Society's
glass plate and film negative collections
into a Society database for long term documentation and
preservation. The next week several of us went to Taneytown
(thanks Ellis,
Phil, Dave, Jim and Ken for attending) to celebrate our
Division 9’s
Sponsored Youth Programs. Over 110 Kiwanians, Circle K’ers,
Key Clubbers, Builders Clubbers and AKtion Clubbers were
there to celebrate also. I believe Suburban Frederick Kiwanis
had the most clubs represented. Yea us!!
At
the last meeting of the month our club members (and significant
others)
officially celebrated the chartering of our clubs newest
sponsored youth
club: Tuscarora High School Key Club. We were honored
to have District Administrator Joe Stankus travel up from
Richmond, VA, Kiwanis LTG Jim Jacobs and his wife Beth
from Mount Airy,
Key Club LTG Anna Lenhart travel down from Hagerstown
and
Governor Elect Art Riley come over from Westminster.
We were also honored to have Tuscarora High School Assistant
Principal Mr. Jeff Marker and Key Club advisor Mr. Von
Mosser (and his wife
and daughter) attend. And the best guests were the students
and several of their parents. I believe it was a nice
celebration that honored their commitment to service and
rejoiced
in their future goals. A special thanks to all that assisted
and
participated,
especially Charlie for arranging everything with the
hotel, Leslie and Charlie for taking door duty, and Jim
and Dave
for assisting with program and certificate preparation.

here to see what all the excitement was about!
On
March 9th our club also offered a special presentation
to our clubs newest project. Jack Tritt, a trustee from
Frederick County Community Foundation joined Phil Pople
in presenting Mike Koval, President of Special
Inspirations, Inc. a check for $5000
from our Foundation
Fund as
a donation to his organization to assist with requests
from
local families
with children having many special needs. Also,
our Fundraising Chair Phil has already started to plan
a special
fundraiser/silent
auction to support this worthwhile organization. The
Silent Auction will be September 23, 2006 at the American
Legion from 7am – 1pm.
Phil will let us know more details soon!
I
know I am looking forward to the speaker programs we
will be offering in April. As
mentioned previously, Jim Jacob’s will be
hosting his Divisional Council meeting during at
our club meeting on April 20,
so we will get to
see other members from other clubs in our division
and I believe one of the things on the agenda is
to elect the incoming
LTG elect. Stay tuned!
I
found a few items recently that I wanted to share with
you. I feel that they speak to our clubs
commitment to
our state, county and youth. The first is a quote
from Paul Myer: “Attitudes
are nothing more than habits of thoughts, and
habits can be acquired. An action repeated becomes
an attitude realized.” The
next one is a riddle, of sorts (author unknown):
I am your constant companion. I am your greatest
asset or heaviest
burden. I will push you up to success or down
to disappointment. I am at your command. Half
the things you do might just as
well be turned over to me, for I can do them
quickly, correctly, and profitably. I am easily
managed, just be firm with me.
Those who are great, I have made great. Those
who are failures, I have made failures. I am
not a machine, though I work
with the precision of a machine and the intelligence
of a person. You can run me for profit, or you
can run me for
ruin. Show me how you want it done. Educate me.
Train me. Lead me. Reward me. And I will then…do
it automatically. I am your servant. Who am I?
I am a habit.
Let
us, as the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick, keep up
our great habits of doing the great
things we do for
our
youth and community!!

The
Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Fund, one of over 525
funds held by The Community Foundation of Frederick County,
recently contributed $5,000 to Special
Inspirations, Inc., a nonprofit organization founded
by parents and friends of children with severe disabilities.
Special Inspirations, Inc. offers respite services that
provide immediate help to families seeking a break from
the daunting task of caring for these special children.
It also provides a resource referral service and makes
volunteer "helpers" available to assist families
with daily chores such as laundry, cleaning, picking up
prescriptions, and food shopping. (Shown upper right:
Community Foundation Trustee Jack Tritt joins Special Inspirations,
Inc. President Mike Koval in receiving a $5,000 donation
from Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Fundraising Chairman
Phil Pople.)
"Special
Inspirations is a perfect recipient for a contribution
from The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Fund," shares
Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick President Christine
Semon. “The Kiwanis motto is ‘Serving the Children
of the World,’ and what better way is there to be
of assistance to those in need right here in Frederick
County than to contribute to Special Inspirations?" For
more information about Special Inspirations, Inc., visit http://www.specialinspirations.org/. Shown

Plans are being made now for the clubs 2nd Annual Silent
Auction.
It will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at the VFW,
Francis Scott Key Post #11 located on Taney Ave. in Frederick.
The time is from 7:00 AM until 1:00 PM. A breakfast buffet
will be served and tickets will cost $9.00 per person. We
need help from everyone to sell tickets and find donations
to auction off. All profits will benefit Special Inspirations,
Inc. I will be talking to the parents of Rock Creek Elementary
on the April 18, 2006 to explain what we are doing and enlisting
there help in this also. With one silent auction already
under our belt, we know how much work is involved in pulling
this off. We need to get started NOW in order to make this
work. Lets show what this club is really made of, roll up
our shirt sleeves and get the job done. Thanks - Phil Pople/Fund
Raising Chair. |
