Phil's Podium by Pres. Phil Pople

First and foremost I want thank again everyone involved in the raffle. For those who were not at the past meeting I will go over the stats. We sold 655 tickets for a gross of $3,225 and we netted $1629. Not to shabby for a first time fund raiser. I hope that we can make this an annual round money-maker. I again especially thank Bill Muffi, Joe Vitanza and Tracy Bemiller for all the extra work they put into this. And I also thank all the people who actually sold the tickets. And of course we need to thank our sponsors, Shipleys TV and Antietam gallery for their great donations. Towards the end, we set up a table in front of Star bucks to sell tickets and introduce folks to Kiwanis. Frank Parker had a nice banner made up. Dave Maloney provided the table and chairs. Later in the day Dave showed up with his brother-in-law, John Vogel, to snap a group photo for this issue of the award-winning eChatter. He later informed me that his camera was later either 1) misplaced or 2) stolen from his car. So, you will have to settle for this sketch to get an idea of what the day was like. Dave's brother-in-law John is at the left buying four tickets. Then there is Joe Vitanza, Joe's son, Frank Parker, Phil Pople, Mick Hickman, and Pete Cove. Also present but not pictured was Bill Muffi!

Now we need to focus on the Kiwanis Night at the Keys game. It is scheduled for June 14th. I would like as many members and their spouses, girlfriends, boyfriends etc. to attend. I don't think this club has ever been in a situation where we are the main focus in front of 5000-6000 people at one time. What a great way for the community to get to know us.

We also have to start working on the silent/live auction coming up on September 13th. We need all sorts of donations from members as well from non-members and companies. And we need as much help before, during and after the auction in order for it to work. Please set aside that night to help out.

April 10th is our annual club meeting for 2008-2009 year at which we hold elections. Please attend.

Also, on July 18th is the Annual Russ Turney Memorial golf tournament at Glade Valley sponsored by the States Attorneys office. 8:30 Shotgun Start. More information to follow.

Check out the award-winning calendar Dave Maloney added at the bottom of this page. Committee chairs, it is now more important than ever that you email Dave dates of your upcoming events prior to the end of the month so he can include them in this new calendar.

Keep up the good work and hey listen up, let's be careful out there.

Helen Maloney Accepted as Facilitator at 2nd Key Leader Weekend

Having attended the 1st Capital District Key Leader, program last October in Annapolis and having suitably impressed the weekend coordinators, Helen Maloney was tapped to fill the position of Teen Facilitator for the upcoming 2nd Key Leader Weekend which is scheduled for April 25-17, 2008 at Arlington Echo in Millersville, MD. Shown right, Helen arrives at the 2007 Key Leader program at Camp Letts, near Annapolis, MD.

Ex. Dir. of Sylvan Leaning Centers Finds Many Potential Students at Club Meeting
by Frank Parker

The guest speaker at last night's weekly meeting of the club was Ms Terri Winn, the Executive Director of four Sylvan Learning Centers in the metro area including Gaithersburg, Frederick, Hagerstown, and Martinsburg. (Pictured left Eric Gatrell presents Ms Winn with a miniature Kiwanis bell in appreciation of her visit.)

In her presentation, Ms Winn explained the origins of the Sylvan chain, how the educational level of prospective students is measured, and that augmentation course outlines are developed. Once the student is assessed and the plan developed/accepted by the student, parent and Sylvan teacher, education begins in structured groups with a three to one student-teacher ratio.

Ms Winn explained how different students may lose or never really get a particular education due to one reason or another. The Sylvan system places a great deal of emphasis on the student learning for themselves with the help and guidance of its staff. A use of tokens which can be redeemed for tangible items is a means of reward and an earlier motivator for the new student. The tokens later becomes less important to the student as confidence and knowledge is acquired. In fact, it is a common occurrence to observe students giving away tokens to newer students as they become hooked on learning and achievement.

An interesting fact is that the Sylvan teacher meets with the student's public school teacher after the assessment. This is done so that both the public and the Sylvan teachers outcomes are complementary and the student can see the connection to his or her school work.

At the conclusion of the presentation, Ms Winn presented the club with an assessment voucher worth $150 which the club can award to a student in need of educational augmentation. The evening was well-received by club members and ended with Ms Winn offering to work with the club in a joint charity based project in the future.
