Dave's Corner by Pres. Dave Maloney

Well, I was impressed. I have been attending Mid-Winter conferences for several years, but this is the first time our club has ever had five members attend! This past weekend, Ellis, VP Mick, Christine, and Pres-Elect Bill joined me in Timonium for an exciting day of workshops and District updates by our Governor, Tom Ganse (right). We focused on sessions dealing with club growth and on getting the word out through improved public relations. And we won an award, too! See below for an article written by Past Gov. Bob Cressy about the award. Speaking of membership, Frank will be heading up a special task force to approach the issue of our sagging membership. Bill will be on his team and comes with some great ideas of his own. They say that membership growth solves all club problems - from providing a greater number of service hours to having adequate funding - membership growth solves them all.

During his presentation this past weekend, Gov. Ganse discussed the District's goals. These District translate directly to what each club should consider as its goals as well. Last August, club delegates ratified a plan that provided the District with a target and that target by 2015 is to have 20,000 Capital District Kiwanians providing 350,000 service hours, re-investing over 4.4 million dollars in their communities, and sponsoring over 860 Service Leadership Programs throughout Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Here is how that target translates into club goals:

1. Increase the number of service hours provided by twelve percent per year
2. Increase the amount of funds raised and distributed by fifteen percent per year
3. Increase the number of Service Leadership Programs sponsored by twelve percent per year

4. Increase membership by twelve percent per year

So we have our marching orders. What changes can we make or activities can we undertake to help ensure that we do our best to meet these targets?

Register now for 2009 DCON. The Capital District Convention committee is busy planning this year's convention which is being held in Dover, DE. They have entitled it 'Stop Over in Dover'. The weekend event is scheduled for Aug 21-23. Care to join me? I'll be driving from Frederick. I'll leave on Friday Aug 21 after morning rush hour and will leave Dover on Sunday Aug 23 around noon if you'd like to go with me. Go here for more information.

Attention, Please! by Bob Cressy

It's me, Past Gov. Bob Cressy. Well, in the upper right I am dressed up as Billy Bob Wilson promoting the upcoming Nashville KI Convention. I don't always look that way! I just wanted to congratulate your club and your Pres. Dave Maloney for having won the award for the Best Club Newsletter in the Capital District which was presented last weekend at the Mason Dixon Mid-Winter Conference. Now - he IS the editor of the eBuilder and the MiniBuilder, so who else should have won? Lead by example, Dave. Great job! Presenting the award at the lower right is IPG Art Riley. That is all! Carry on! I gotta' check in with my brother, Willie!

Key Leader was a Huge Success! by Dave Maloney

With over 80 teens in attendance (upper right), this past month's Key-Leader weekend in Millersville, MD was a huge success. Our club paid for two teens to attend. One was Natalia Weir from FHS. Due to a last minute cancellation of a Frederick County student, the second student we funded was a special needs teen selected from a pool of stand-by teens by Key-Leader coordinator, Donna Landis. I sent my daughter, Helen, who attended as a facilitator. This was her third year and she, once again, had a great time! To the lower right are the adult leaders and the teen facilitators. Donna Landis is to the far left. Nicole McDermott, another Kiwanian, is kneeling at the left. Helen is the third in from the left standing. Helen and Natalia will be visiting our club in May. Watch the video!

Thanks Joe! by Dave Maloney

I just wanted to give a special shout-out to Fund Raising Chairman, Joe Vitanza (shown right all set for the drawing) for heading up such a successful raffle fund raiser. We held the drawing this past week. The 3rd place prize went to a Mount Airy Club-sold ticket holder. The 2nd and 1st prizes went to Frederick Club-sold ticket holders. The 2nd prize was won by our own member, Phil Pople! Thanks, again, Joe.
