Bill's
Corner by
Pres. Bill Muffi
April at a glance: I would like to take a moment and wish each and every one a Happy Easter.
This past had several fine speaker programs. In brief, we had Paul Fer from St. John's Regional Catholic Church, DFC White from the Sheriff's Office, Rob Bastress, acupuncturist and Joe's wife, Bonnie Vitanza, who announced the successful opening of Glad Valley Preschool.
I am pleased to report that our recent Bring a Friend Night was a success! I want to thank each and everyone who attended. It will take that extra effort to bring our club to the next level. We had eight guests and a great evening. It was a special night. Thank you.
Coming up is the Board Meeting on April 6 and Service Project at Hope Alive on April 10th. (Meeting place for the Hope Alive is the Elks Club around 8:30 A.M. for car pooling. |
Hope Alive Work Detail, Sabillasville, MD, April 10th
Here are some of the projects we will be tackling at Hope Alive this Saturday:
Outside
1. Weed flower and vegetable garden
2. Shovel stone dust back on pathway and steps
3. Mow prayer path
4. Sweep porches, back patio, play area by basement bedrooms, parking lot around Joshua Center
5. Trim weeds along fence line
6. Canadian Thistle control in flower beds and fields (spray and sprayer needed)
7. Clean/dust wall and ceiling light fixtures
8. Pull out dining room buffet, clean floor & wall
9. Wipe down all baseboard trim
10. Remove all utensil containers and items from food prep table storage; clean all items and shelves and reorganize items
11. Tidy storage shelves, sinks and laundry machines in each laundry room
12. Clean kitchen windows, sills and frames
13. Clean out junk, organize and sweep the corner where all the bikes are kept
Hope Alive has tools and cleaning supplies, but my experience is that you should bring some yourself. Shovel, rake, broom, etc. for outside work. Maybe a bucket and sponge for inside work.
The address is:
17645 Harbaugh Valley Road
Sabillasville, MD 21780-9616
(301) 241-4005
Here is a map.
Dave Maloney will bring a tiller and sprayer. Meet at the Elks at 8AM. We'll work until 1PM and should be back to the Elks by 2PM.

Club Supports Pinewood Derby
Member Frank Parker tried his hand at building a Pinewood Derby race car to compete against Cub Scouts at Cub Pack 285's recent Pinewood Derby. Our club is the Chartering Organization for Pack 285.
Racing against only Cubmaster Paul Hinch's "Cub Scout's 100th Bday Special", Frank came in second. Frank was joined at the Derby by club members Debbi Matthews and Dave Maloney.

Acupuncturist

Robert Bastress, a National Board Certified Acupuncturist from the Integrative Medicine Center in Hagerstown, MD, recently visited the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick to explain the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, eating well, and treating the source of illness and not just its symptoms through holistic healthcare services. Pictured Rob Bastress (right) uses an acupuncture chart to explain the twelve main meridians to club president Bill Muffi. |
St. John's Regional Catholic Church

At a recent club meeting, Paul Fer, Assistant Principle at St. John's Regional Catholic School, reported to the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick on the success his school is having. "Celebrating 180 years of academic excellence in Frederick County, the school has been awarded the 2009 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in recognition of its outstanding academic programs, state-of-the-art facility, student accomplishments, and the Christ-centered atmosphere on campus," Fer said. Pictured is Paul Fer sharing school literature with club member Peter Brehm. |
H1N1

At a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick, Angela Blair, MSW, MS, CHES, Health Educator at the Frederick County Health Dept., explained the history of the H1N1 Flu virus as well as Frederick County's steps to minimize its spread through the use of flu shots and nasal-spray vaccines which are available at Health Dept. clinics. "Each year in the United States, on average, seasonal flu-related complications results in more than 200,000 people being hospitalized and 36,000 deaths," said Blair. Pictured, Angela Blair shares H1N1 flu information with club member, Eric Gatrell. |
Crime Prevention

DFC Kevin White of the Frederick County Sheriff's Dept. recently discussed crime prevention and the Neighborhood Watch Program with members of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick. DFC White explained phone scams, con games, the need to secure your home, and other ways to protect yourself against crime. Pictured, left to right, club member Joe Vitanza receives some crime prevention tips from DFC White. |
