Christine's Connections by Pres. Christine Semon

As we slowly ease into August, the flowers may be wilting because of the summer heat however our hearts are also yearning and looking for the strength to make decisions about and plans for the future of our club. As a club, we did have a slow month for speakers, however on July 20th, we were honored to have a special presentation from our Capital District Secretary (and esteemed member). Ellis Stroup shared with us the recent suggestions and proposals presented to the Kiwanis International Board by the Restructuring committee. It sounds like some of the proposals are to reshape the Kiwanis organization by redistricting and restructuring some current roles and hopefully save the organization monies in the process. There were many suggestions offered in the report Ellis read. If you have specific questions, I am sure he would be glad to share them with you. The recommended proposal will probably be presented to the new International Board in October. So, for us, as a club, we might see changes or adjustments after next years International Convention in Texas, if delegates vote and accept some or all of the recommendations. Keep your eyes and ears out there. If/when I hear anything, I will definitely let you know!

We as a club had some serious conversations about the direction our club might or might not be headed in this month. At several meetings, we discussed our exciting 34 (almost 35) year history, our obligations to our 5 sponsored youth clubs, past projects and new ideas for the future. The conversation definitely isn’t over for us. There are still things to do and decisions to be made. I was happy to finally have a ‘public’ club conversation about this topic, which has been on all of our minds. Thanks to all who contributed thoughts and opinions to the conversations!! Keep it up!

Someone once said “We don’t remember days; we remember moments.” With the hectic pace of today's world, we often forget to savor small pleasures while we are making those big plans. To my dear Kiwanis club, please continue to enjoy the pleasures and moments along the way. These could include: reading a good book (or listen to one, in my case); a wonderfully wrapped gift (that you wrapped); precious moments with a friend or grandchild; a wonderful memory of being able to mentor a young person; helping someone less fortunate (just because it is the right thing to do); having someone you don’t know very well thank you for your contributing to their life. These and many other moments are the essence of life, if we are able to stop long enough along the way to savor and enjoy them. I suspect that some of these moments are partly why each one of us chose to be a Kiwanian, whether it was 55 years ago or 5 months ago. As H. G. Wells once said: ”We must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind us to the fact that each moment is a miracle and a mystery.” I am hopeful that we, as a club, will be able to continue to savor these special moments, develop and create more moments and most importantly, continue to contribute to our community, the best way we know how, as Kiwanians. Have an awesome month Suburban Frederick!
