Connections by
Pres. Christine Semon
As our club continues to move through the “Season of
Giving” we are about to start our largest fundraiser
for the year, so get ready! As if you didn’t already
know this from all of Dave Maloney's reminder emails and pleas
at meetings, we should continue to sign
up for (many!) shifts at the gift-wrap! We will
be at the FSK Mall, in front of J C Penney’s one more
time (thanks Dave!) from December 8 (for set up only) thru
December 24. We will be assisting patrons with wrapping gifts
for their friends and families in exchange for donations.
The best part is what we do with our donations earned afterwards
— we use the monies to support our sponsored youth (Circle
K, Key Clubs and Builders Club) and many
agencies and organizations throughout our community.
So far, many club members have signed up. Thanks! We have
also had some members’ from the Downtown club, parents
and scouts from Cub Scout Pack 235, MSMU, and members from
the new Key Club at Tuscarora H.S. sign up too! Yea! We are
still waiting to hear from others to fill in some of the blanks.
Please go to our club
web site to see where the vacancies are. Then contact
Dave
Maloney ASAP and tell him which positions you would
like to fill.
Next
I would like to update the club on a few items. First of all,
GREAT job on the Fruit sale this year!!! Phil can take a lot
of pleasure in pushing this fundraiser through and making
it a success. Phil estimated that we sold about $4600 in fruit
for a net profit of over $1100. See Phil's report below. Special
thanks to Walkersville Key Club members for selling this year
also. The fruit has arrived. Thanks to those who helped off-loading.
Contact Phil to arrange to pick up the fruit that you sold.
It is located at 1195 N. East St. Thanks again!
The next update is in regards to the Family K Day. It was
supposed to occur in November, however, unfortunately, it
didn’t due to “not enough publicity and not enough
people signing up.” I have been in contact with some
Circle K representatives and the new date is scheduled for
March 18, 2006. This will be a great event to participate
with all levels of the family and providing direct service
to the community. Please save the date now and I will pass
on more details, as soon as I hear them.
In regards to the new Key Club at Tuscarora High School, here
is the scoop. Jim Krysiek, Mark Gaver and I met with the new
advisor (Mr. Mosser-who helped start the Key Club at Middletown
High), the principal (Jay Berno-who helped start the Key Club
at Walkersville High when he was there), and many of the new
clubs members at one of their meetings this past month. Yes,
in three different visits! They are all very excited and enthusiastic
about being sponsored by our club! They already have several
projects they are working on and some have also signed up
to assist us with our gift-wrap. I am hoping that we can discuss
this topic at the Board meeting in December and work on getting
their club officially chartered with KI soon. Maybe we can
have a Charter night in January or February 2006? As Ralph
Waldo Emerson once said, "Nothing great was ever achieved
without enthusiasm.” Tuscarora, along with our other
sponsored clubs at Mount St Mary’s University, Walkersville
High and Middletown Middle, are definitely out there achieving
great successes and making a huge difference, enthusiastically,
in our community and the world! Keep up the outstanding work!
On a similar note, I have one more area to cover. As we are
in this ‘Season of Giving,’ many of us will be
out there doing lots of shopping for gifts for friends and
family in our lives. This could also be a time for us all
to reflect on our own gifts, that we personally possess. Maybe
we could reflect on a few tough, yet powerful, questions to
help us focus on our own purpose in life. Ask yourself: What
am I meant to do here? How can I best serve mankind? What
have I done with my life so far? What do I want to do with
the rest of my life? The answers could be pretty energizing
and revitalizing. There is only one YOU in this Universe.
I know that you have offered and continue to offer many gifts
to all you come in contact with. I am so proud of what each
of you and our club has done in our community and the world
over the past 33 years! I am honored to be in the Suburban
Frederick Kiwanis Club! We are all about finding new ways
to serve others and isn’t that what life is and should
be all about, anyway? Let's keep discovering, sharing and
giving away our gifts! I’d like to end with two more
inspiring and motivating quotes. To quote Mr. Ralph Waldo
Emerson, again, "The creation of a thousand forests is
in one acorn.” I believe our club is full of such nuts!
(Sorry, I meant acorns!) Finally, to quote the great Dr. Albert
Schweitzer, "I don’t know what your destiny will
be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will
be really happy are those who have sought and found how to
serve."
I
wish you and your families a wonderful Holiday Season. And
remember — YOU ARE THE GIFT!!!! |
Fruit
Sales Results by
Phil Pople I
want to personally thank all those involved with making this
year a sucess with the fruit sales. Thanks to your hard work
we did better then last year!! Our total profit came out to
$1147. I had to subtract $50 for shipping. Even with that
we made about $250 more than last year. The Walkersville Key
club made a cool $241. The fruit arrived on Dec. 1 and has
already been off-loaded. Contact me to pick up your fruit.
I will also be passing around a sign up sheet this Thursday
for help with the gift wrap set up. It is scheduled for Dec
8 at 7:30. I will be helping Larry load up all the material
at his house then going on to the Lone Star for dinner if
anybody wishes to join us at 6:00 that night. Thanks
again for all your help |
Middletown
Middle Builders Club seeks members from
Gazette.net The
Builders Club at Middletown Middle School is accepting new
members. The club, which is similar to Key Clubs in high schools,
is open to anyone in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
Linda
Caron, a sixth-grade social studies teacher who advises the
Builders Club, said the club aims to provide teamwork opportunities
for service to the school and community. ‘‘The
kids get a variety of work in the community, outside the community
and in school,” Caron said. ‘‘Whatever they
do, the kids come up with the ideas.”... read

Share's Son's Iraq Experiences with Club At
a recent club meeting, Kathy Lecomte shared her son's experiences
as a Navy Medic serving with the Marines in Iraq. Her son

tending to the wounded, being in an armoured vehicle when
struck by a roadside bomb, enduring the heat and boredom —
all now routine for a son finishing up his third tour of duty
