Middletown Middle Builders Club seeks members

Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005

The Builders Club at Middletown Middle School is accepting new members. The club, which is similar to Key Clubs in high schools, is open to anyone in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

Linda Caron, a sixth-grade social studies teacher who advises the Builders Club, said the club aims to provide teamwork opportunities for service to the school and community. ‘‘The kids get a variety of work in the community, outside the community and in school,” Caron said. ‘‘Whatever they do, the kids come up with the ideas.”

At the club’s last after-school meeting, members worked on designing two banners to send to U.S. military units in Iraq, Caron said. The club plans to have the banners signed by all students at Middletown Middle School and given to the military during the holiday season.

Like Key Club, the Builders Club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick.

To join, students may fill out permission forms, available at a bulletin board outside the main office or from outside of Room 208.

The next meeting is today after school in room 208. The following meeting will be held Dec. 1, as schools are closed on Thanksgiving.

Schools celebrate education

Among other local schools this week, Valley Elementary School is marking American Education Week, which ends Friday.

Today, Valley Elementary students plan to recognize office personnel and school health providers. Students and teachers will receive ice cream to underscore the phrase ‘‘school is cool.”

Friday, during Salute to Students Day, students may dress as if they were in their future careers, and teachers may wear their college sweatshirts.
