Phil's Podium by Pres. Phil Pople

Well what a month November was! Maybe one for the record books. With everything we got planned, it could make your head spin.

First, I want to thank Bill Muffi for all the work he has put in as far as fund-raising. I could not have picked a better guy to run that committee. We raised over $1800 in the fruit sale. I want to thank everyone involved who helped off-load the truck. For the 1st time since I've been involved we even had the truck driver and his partner helping us.

The Black Friday weekend giftwrap was a success. We made $700 for the three days even which is about $500 more than we made last year. I like the idea of doing it because it gives us a chance to "warm up" for the main event. Unlike most of you, where wrapping is like riding a bike, I need the time to practice before the ballgame really begins. Speaking of which, PLEASE sign up early and often for the wrap. We need your help this year more than ever because several of our more dependable wrappers from years past will not be able to help this year. If this is going to work, we need EVERYBODY'S participation. Thanks to Ideal Auto Group and Wal-Mart for their donations towards the wrap. With their combined $600 cash donations plus the $700 we made for the Black Friday weekend we are well on our way to making this maybe the best year ever.

For those who were not at the meeting last Thursday, the board approved spending approx $1500 towards the purchase of a 37" wide screen LCD HD tv from Shipleys and an IPOD from Best Buy. Those will be our main ticket items we will be wraffling off starting during the giftwrap and ending at the end of March. Tickets will sell for $5. Thanks to Joe Vitanza for picking up the permit and handling getting the wraffle tickets procured.

Since program chair Bud Jackson is sick, I ask that everyone help in getting speakers for our meetings. December is a month we usually don't bring them in because of the wrap but we need help for January and beyond. So please see me if you have anyone in mind.

Lets keep Glen, Bud and Ken in your prayers for a speedy recovery. And thanks again for everybody's help in making this year so far a huge success.

Be sure to go to our web site to see which slots still need wrapping. The week before Christmas will be an all-hands evolution. So get ready especially for that! Go to the web site. Email Dave Maloney with slots you can fill.

Ideal Auto Group Contributes to Gift Wrap

Kenneth Cherry, Sales Manager at Ideal Auto Group, recently presented a check for $500 to the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick in support of the club's annual FSK Mall gift-wrap, the club's major fund raiser for the year. All proceeds from the fund raiser are contributed back to the community to assist children and the less fortunate. Pictured are (L to R) Kenneth Cherry presenting the check to club president, Phil Pople, and club fund raising chairman, Bill Muffi.

Holiday Party Date Set

Charlie Merts reminds you all that the annual Club Holiday Party will be held at the Holiday Inn on January 12, 2008 at 6 PM. Gentlemen should wear jackets. Cost is $19 per person. Each person should bring an inexpensive gift for exchange. Be sure to prepay Charlie on or before the January 10th club meeting.

Suburban Frederick Club Fruit Sales

"We had another record year selling fruit," says club fundraising chairman, Bill Muffi. "And with all the extra hands (including the truck driver and his wife), we unloaded in short order," he continued.

All club members participated in selling fruit, but some members always seem to hit new highs. Included are the magnificent seven Phil Pople, Ed Crawford, Jim Krysick, Bud Jackson, Charles Mertz, Joe Vitanza and Christine Semons.

Picture to the left is the crew who helped with off-loading the truck. From left to right are Phil Pople, Frank Parker, Terry Proescholdt, Ellis Stroup, Bill Muffi, Ed Crawford, Eric Gatrell, Dave Maloney (kneeling), Carmi Sayler IV, and the truck driver and his wife. Not shown are club members Joe Vitanza, Jim Wiggins, Terry Bemiller and Leslie Bruchey.

Clergy Appreciation Night

The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick recently held its Clergy Appreciation night. Guest clergy received a Humanitarian Award as a token of the club's appreciation for their services. Guest clergy included Pastor J. Sherman Mason, Jr. of the Simpson Christian Community Church and Minister Anna P. Shanklin of the First Missionary Baptist Church. Each shared thoughts on the importance of religious ministries to the spiritual well-being of their communities.
