Your Help!
Food
Bank
Pesident Jerry reminds all members to remember to bring your
Maryland Food Bank donations to our monthly Board Meeting which
is this week.
"The
mission of the Maryland Food Bank is simple:
as long as hunger exists in Maryland, the
Maryland Food Bank will strive to supply
necessary grocery products to charitable
food providers so that these organizations
can feed every individual and family in
need. The Maryland Food Bank will accomplish
this by gathering excess donated grocery
products from the food industry and the
general public and by distributing these
products to community food providers."

Jerry's
Words of Wisdom by
Pres. Jerry Jenkins
February
already, can it be? The time is just flying
by and we’re 4 months into our Kiwanis
year.
We
have nominated a new Treasurer, Leslie Davidson,
survived the gift wrap and have moved on to the
basketball games at Mount Saint Mary’s.
We have added two new members, Jim Wiggins and
Frank Parker. The Christmas party was wonderful
and, of course, Jim Krysiek attained the ripe
old age of fifty. What else is in store for us?
Kiwanis
has a great training program with training sessions
and books to assist us neophytes running the
chairs. I have often felt, however, in the last
four months that I lacked internal club information
that would have assisted me in being president.
I have therefore asked a committee of three past
Presidents and incidentally Charter member, to
assist future office holders to better know the
inner workings of the office of President. I
hope that this committee will be continued to
be active and to be of assistance to future office
holders. We can all benefit from the experience
of our past Presidents and the history of this
club.
I
want to thank our three delegates to the Mid-Winter,
Ellis Stroup, Christine Semon and Dave Maloney.
Your representation of this club is to be commended
and is greatly appreciated.
We
will have our election of a new Treasurer this
Wednesday, February 4, 2004. I want to take this
occasion to thank Carmi Sayler for his diligence
and devotion to our club and our money for the
many, many years. We owe him a great debt of
gratitude for the manner in which he had carried
out his duties as our Treasurer. Thank you Carmi
for your many contributions to Suburban Frederick
Kiwanis and its members.
As
we continue on through our year, as President
I would ask that each and every member evaluate
your individual contributions to the good of
the club. I am sure we could each find a way
to do a little more and relieve some of those
who do a lot. It doesn’t take much to sit
at a table and check off names while at a basketball
game, or be on call for the van for 4 hours a
week.
Finally,
I have not heard a bad word about our new meeting
place or the food. All seem to enjoy it very
much. (The only exception was when the banana
cream pie was still a bit frozen.) We should
have such problems with our new meeting place
at the Holiday Inn.
Respectfully,
Jerry
Capital
District MidWinter Conference 2004 a Smash
Hit!
— Suburban
Frederick Receives TWO Awards — by
Dave Maloney

The
Capital District MidWinter Conference for 2004
was held at the Clarion Resort Hotel in Ocean
City, MD Jan 29-Feb 1, 2004. Among the 325 Kiwanians
and 89 spouses in attendance were Suburban Frederick
members Ellis Stroup, Christine Semon and Dave
Maloney. As the new editor of Capital Builder,
Dave made a lot of important contacts, took pictures,
and attended training sessions. Christine worked
closely with the K-youth groups and participated
in the Saturday afternoon session "Developing
Future Leaders Through HOBY." And long-time
Capital District Sec. Ellis coordinated many
behind-the-scene administrative activities, kept
everything on track, and looked very spiffy in
his tuxedo at the Saturday evening Governor's
Banquet.
The
highlight of the Saturday morning Awards Breakfast
was the presentation of TWO awards to Suburban
Frederick. The first was the Attendance Award
for the Emerald Section (clubs with membership
of 30-45 members. We were credited with 89% overall
attendance for the 2002-2003 administrative year.
We only barely beat out the Westminster club
who was runner-up with 88%. The second ribbon
was for the Annual Achievement Award for Single
Service" for our section. We received the
Award in recognition of our Frederick Memorial
Hospital Van Driving Program. Congrats to project
coordinator Clyde Roney and all the van drivers.
While
visiting the Caring Corner which raises money
for the Capital District Foundation through sales,
silent auctions, and raffles, I tried my hand
at riding a Segway being raffled by the Kiwanis
Club of the Severn. I purchased some raffle tickets
for this gotta-have conveyance.

Annual
Christmas Party a Success!
Our
recently held Kiwanis Club of Suburban
Annual Holiday Party, held at the Hollow
Creek Golf Club in Middletown was, once
again, hailed as a huge success. In addition
to the fellowship, we all enjoyed hors
d'oeuvre including crab dip, cheeses and
fruit. The sumptuous dinner consisted of
steak and salmon. Entertainment included
a lively 50th Birthday Roast of Jim Krysiek
conducted by comedian Carmi Sayler. Door
prizes included some high quality presents
picked out and wrapped by Christine Semon,
who, by the way, did a great job along
with Charlie Mertz and Mark Gaver in organizing
the affair — with a special thanks
to Donna Gaver for the fancy table centerpieces.

State
Farm marks 5-years of coloring book donation
to Frederick Memorial
(Frederick
News Post, Jan. 18, 2004) Five years ago, Clyde Roney,
a longtime volunteer in Frederick Memorial Hospital's
Emergency Department, noticed that State Farm Insurance
was handing out coloring books from their booth at
the Frederick Fair. Mr. Roney says, " I just
walked up and asked how I could get some coloring
books for the children who come to the hospital's
emergency room. And that was the beginning of a beautiful
collaboration...read

Congressional
Candidate, Scott
Rolle, Explains Platform
The
Suburban Frederick Club was honored to
have Frederick County Prosecutor and Congressional
Candidate, Scott Rolle, as our speaker
recently. The tough young prosecutor Governor
Bob Erlich called the "best State's
Attorney in Maryland" has announced
he is challenging long-time incumbent Roscoe
Bartlett in the sixth District Republican
congressional primary. Scott grew up in
Maryland’s Sixth Congressional District
and is a graduate of the FBI National Law
Institute. He received his B.A. from the
University of Dayton and his J.D. from
Ohio Northern University. Scott has practiced
law in Maryland for 17 years. Scott
Rolle is married to Mary Catherine Rolle
(left). They have three children;
Dawn, Scott, Jr. and Devon. The Rolles
are parishioners of St. Katherine Drexel
parish, Frederick.
