Ken's Korner by Pres. Ken Dell

WANTED: A FEW GOOD MEN OR WOMEN willing to give of themselves to the greater community of Frederick. Need not be rich or famous, just willing to listen, learn and volunteer to help others, especially young children. We will provide the opportunities so that all you have to do is show up.

This could be part of a recruitment ad for our club. We work to help others, many of who are less fortunate then ourselves. In order to do this we need warm bodies to not only help with the various programs we run but also to work the various fund raisers that we have to raise money so that we can help others. I realize that some of you can’t spend half a day standing and bending and lifting but even if you could help for an hour or two sitting in a chair registering people or handing out tickets or whatever your presence would not only be very helpful but greatly appreciated. Please try to be positive and think not “ I cant do that ” but rather “ yes I can help “even if only for a little while." Phil is asking for and needs your help with the upcoming Shrimp Feed and Art Auction. We need these funds to continue our community work so PLEASE HELP.

Along the same line, we need your help in recruiting new members. Again, warm bodies are required. Challenge yourself to talk with someone today about our club and not only about what we do but also about what you do and that "warm fuzzy feeling" that you get when you hand a sick child a teddy bear or see the tears stop because there is a coloring book & crayons in the hospital waiting room or watch as a child progresses from being scared of even getting near a horse to being in control after several weeks of Therapeutic Riding. Speak with pride and enthusiasm about your experiences. Who knows, they may want to see what we are all about. If you talk about how much fun you have (leave out the hard work part if you want to) rather than just walk up to them and ask if they want to join you may have someone ask you if they can come.

Keep up the good work and remember that the Kiwanis are alive and well in Suburban Frederick!

Art Auction a Go!

Fund raising chairman Phil Pople has announced that contracts have been inked for our first Art Auction Fund Raiser scheduled for April 30, 2005 at the Holiday Inn- Ft. Detrick. Says Phil:

"The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick will hold its first annual Art/Sports memorabilia auction in conjunction with at the W. Patrick St. Holiday Inn on April 30th between 7 and 10 PM. Ross Galleries will bring between 175 and 200 art and sport artifacts to auction off with a live auctioneer. They have agreed to let us bring 10 items that will also be auctioned off live. Other items that we might bring will be auctioned off as a silent auction. Tickets will be on sale for $10 per person, $15 per couple."

Maryland Junior Miss Brook Pombleka Visits Club

At a recent meeting, we were entertained by Brooke Pombleka, Maryland's representative to this past year's Junior Miss competition. Brooke explained the character-building nature of The Junior Miss Program and how it has helped her in so many ways. Her talent was singing, and she entertained the club with her rendition of "Over the Rainbow". Pictured here is a rose between two thorns (Patrick Haley, Brooke, Ken Dell).

Club Continues Support for Cub Pack 285

Pictured are Cub Pack 285 Cubmaster, Jim Fox, receiving a contribution from club Pres., Ken Dell in support of Pack 285 for whom our club is the Sponsoring Organization. Mr. Fox explained the Pack's active schedule and shared a video of recent Pack activities. Jim is also a representative for the Frederick T-Ball league and was pleased to also receive a check in support of that organization from our club.

2005 Holiday Party

Dave & Barb Maloney welcomed the club to their home in early January for a Holiday party. Catered by Leiters Fine Catering of Martinsburg, VA, we had lots of good food and drink. Past-Pres. Jerry presented awards and members drew tickets for door prizes. Charlie Mertz received the Appreciation Award for his continued service to the club every meeting night, Christine Semon received the Appreciation Award for her service to our Youth groups, Rob Summers was presented with the Hixson Award for his outstanding service as Secretary, and Vern Simmons received two awards — one an Appreciation Award in recognition of his fund raising efforts and the the second was the coveted Kiwanian of the Year award!Click here for photos of the event.
