Connections by
Pres. Christine Semon
As
we enter into this month of love (with Valentines Day coming
up), it reminds us of a few things including deciding if
we will continue (or even start) those New Years Resolutions
and trying to figure out this wonderful Maryland weather
(is it winter or is it spring?).
I
am very thankful for great memories from January in our
club, as we started up our speaker program again. We were
entertained by the multi talented (and very busy) Jim Fox
as he shared with us about his Cub Scout Pack 265 and The
T Ball Association the same evening. I know I enjoyed his
brief striptease act between presentations! The next week
we learned a lot about the Alzheimer's Association and how
to keep our minds active and exercised to help prevent the
diagnosis. Keep working on those exercises!! And finally,
last week, we had our long promised Gift-Wrap Appreciation
Night with a great presentation from Special Olympics of
Frederick County. The volunteers from Special Olympics shared
some great stories and experiences with their volunteering
at different sports events. They even offered some opportunities
for people to come out and assist or volunteer at the games.
We also had attendees share some memorable gift-wrapping
stories that had a few of us rolling in the aisles! Thanks
again to all our wonderful volunteers, especially those from
Builders Club, Key Club, Circle K, Cub Scouts, SAFE Kids,
and especially friends, family members and significant others
of our members. Without all of you, our success at the gift-wrap
this year would not have been possible!
I am looking forward to another great month of presentations!
Thanks to Phil and Charlie for scheduling this month. Please
check out the schedule and come by the meetings to check
them out!! Looking ahead a bit, please remember we are having
our first Mason-Dixon Regional Conference for Divisions 9,
12, and 14 on March 4th in Columbia, MD. It is not in VA
this time, so hopefully we can have a great representation
from our club. Also, K Family Night will be on March 23rd
in Taneytown to celebrate all the levels of our wonderful
K family. We should have a great turnout to support our sponsored
youth!
Now,
shifting to a different topic, I wanted to write a bit
about Kindness and Humility. As William Penn once said, "I
expect to pass through this life but once. If, therefore,
there can be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I
can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, for I shall
not return this way again." I have tried to live like
this and many of our club members are definitely doing lots
of this in their own ways throughout our community! Similarly,
humility can be a magnetic force that attracts goodwill from
people and it honors those who posses it. Humility is an
attitude of service and caring for others more than you care
about yourself. And those who achieve humility usually are
blessed beyond their wildest dreams. With this being said,
I am truly honored and humbled at the fact that this club
felt that I deserved to receive the esteemed George Hixson
award! I actually think I am still in shock from this tribute.
Many of our members are amazing role models for me in both
their kindness and humility. I feel very blessed and privileged
to be in your club and in this revered group of individuals
and honorees! I only hope that I can continue to live up
to this honor, as many other members in our club do and continue
to live with kindness and humility throughout their lives. |
Dave
Maloney was recognized as Kiwanian of the Year at a recent
meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban
Frederick. "With his substantial computer and communication
skills, Dave has served our club and this community above
and beyond the call of duty this past year," said Club
Past-Pres. Ken Dell. (Pictured is Pres. Ken Dell, left, congratulating
Dave Maloney as Kiwanian of the Year.)

Christine
Semon was recently awarded the coveted Kiwanis International
Hixson Fellowship Award by the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick. "The Hixson
recipient is a person who dares to dream big dreams and set
big goals. One who is willing to pay the price, make the
sacrifice, try the difficult and attempt the impossible," said
Award Committee Chairman Jerry Jenkins. (Pictured is Jerry
Jenkins, left, presenting the Hixson Award to Christine Semon.)

The
Annual Christmas Party was enjoyed by all who attended.
There was dancing, singing, eating, a gift exchange, and

Our
club recognized volunteers who made the 2005 Christmas
Gift
Wrap a success. Over 40 guests joined club members
recently to enjoy a fine dinner and receive a "Thank
You" for
their time and effort spent in helping club members with
the 2005
gift wrap fundraiser. Tony Tate, volunteer coordinator for Special
Olympics of Frederick County, was our guest speaker.
He was joined on the dais by other volunteers including Ashley
Piles, Megan Shafer and Michael Bermudez.

Joyce
Heptner, Regional Director of the Alzheimer
Association, recently urged club members to build
more synapses! "Alzheimer's is a progressive
brain disease that causes confusion, personality and behavior
changes
and
impaired judgment. The incidence of Alzheimer's increases
with age. An astounding one-third of Maryland's population
consists of baby boomers who are at risk of developing Alzheimer's
disease. There are approximately 83,000 Marylanders with
Alzheimer's disease. Our mission is to provide leadership
to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement
of research, while enhancing
care and support services for individuals and their families,"
she said.

The
Kiwanis Club of Frederick recently hosted Gov. Yvonne
Holley's Official Visit to Division 9 at Crumland
Farms.
Five members of the Suburban Frederick club were in attendance
including Ellis Stroup, Larry Fellows, Dave Maloney, Christine
Semon and Rob Summers. Hosted by Div. Lt. Gov. Jim Jacobs,
Gov. Yvonne was presented with several gifts of local flavor
including baskets of McCutcheon's jams as well as a print of
a painting of Francis Scott Key. Gov. During her speech, Yvonne
shared her goals and encouraged members to bring in just
one new member to double the size of our District. Shown
