Phil's Podium by Pres. Phil Pople

Howdy, Folks!

Boy do you believe this administrative year is already one third of the way over? Although if you think about what all has been accomplished in the last four months it shouldn't surprise you so much. But as they say, we've only just begun. We still need to be plugging those raffled tickets up until the end of March. We are now in what I call the profit zone, so every ticket sold means bucks to our club. And don't forget those cell phones. Terry has already sent a shipment off and we got a check for $35 back already! I was thinking maybe we could set up a box at the Keys game we are hosting. What a gold mine that could be if we advertise it right.

Bill is brining in a speaker on the 24th to talk about the upcoming auction planned for September. If we do this right it could rival what we take in during the gift wrap. But its going to take all hands and its going to take people willing to go out into the community to solicit donations just like Bill and I did to get donations for the raffle.

I want to thank the party committee for putting on a great holiday party this year. Special thanks to Debbi and Charlie for making it a special night. Click here for an amazing video of a couple of the super gifts obatined during the gift exchange! Congrats to Ken Dell (right with Christine Semon) for winning the Hixson award. He truly deserved it. And we wish him a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ken. (Too bad Ken did not wear his name tag. I had to fine him one dollar!)

Please don't forget to bring in you cans during every board night to Terry can take them to the recycle center. You would be amazed at how much we could bring in if we make it a pledge to do it every month.

Thanks for all your help and cooperation

Da Prez

P.S. Just kidding about fining Ken a dollar!

Welcome Pete Cove!

New member, Pete Cove, was recently inducted as the newest member of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick. Pete is an information technology professional and works at Affiliated Computer Services, Inc. He was active in our recent gift wrap fund raiser and lives with his wife, Michelle, and family here in Frederick. Shown right, Pete, top left, with sponsor, Bill Muffi standing to the right and Frank Parker who is about to light the candles.

Sell Those Raffle Tickets by Bill Muffi

The Raffle Fund Raiser is in full throttle. We have passed the break even point so hear on out it profit. It's time to be creative because every dollar going forward goes to children's charities! Here are some ideas for moving tickets: small prize for the top producer; keep raffle tickets in the car because you never know when an opportunity will present itself. If you need more tickets they will be available each Thursday night from me or Joe. Be sure to ask permission to sell at events such as Little League games, fairs, concerts, etc.

Holiday Party Jan. 12th

This year's Holiday Party was held on Jan. 12th at the Holiday Inn. Good friends, good food, good jokes, and good gifts. What more could one want? Here is a photo album of the event. Click images to enlarge.

Mason-Dixon Regional Mid-Winter Conference a Success

The first of the Capital District Regional Mid-Winter Conferences was held by the Mason-Dixon Region at the Howard County Community College in Columbia, MD, on Saturday, January 26th. It is an excellent facility, and the program which consisted of work shops and presentations was very well coordinated by Trustee/PLG Don Dudey and PLG/District Assistant Key Club Administrator Bill Hand, with lots of other hands to helping as well. These conferences are most important for successful club operations. By having them on a regional, smaller geography than the older district-wide basis, many more attendees come to share their experiences and learn from district committees how to better manage their clubs. Over 900 attended the eight mid-winter conferences last year. Shown left Dave Maloney poses with KI Pres. Dave Curry of Butte, MT. To the left, Dave accepts the 2006-2007 Best Club Web Site Award from Immed. Past. Gov. Bob Cressy. Ten such awards were awarded throughout the Capital District with Suburban Frederick the loan recipient within the Mason Dixon Region.

Club Contributes to Special Olympics of Frederick County

A Special Olympics of Frederick County (SOFC) athlete and volunteers were guests at a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick. The SOFC provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for people with intellectual disabilities. The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick presented the SOFC with a $400 donation. Pictured left is Christine making the introductions of our guests. Pictured right, from left to right, are volunteers Rachel Fello and Megan Shaffer, athlete Richie Jones, and Kiwanian Christine Semon.
