Jerry's
Words of Wisdom by
Pres. Jerry Jenkins
Welcome to 2004. I hope all of you had a safe
and Joyful New Year celebration.
Wednesday
the 7th will be our first meeting at the Holiday
Inn and I’m sure we are all looking
forward to that (except those that are on a diet!)
Below
are the Gift Wrap numbers from Vern. Looks that
even with not opening until noon and taking into
consideration two "snow-days" during
which time the gift wrap was closed, we still
managed to
reach our goal of $20,000+ gross. For
all who participated a "Bravo Zulu" (Navy
talk for "well done"). And a special
thanks to Vern who did so much to make it a success.
I know
it was frustrating for Vern when he didn’t
have enough people signed up — and relief
when people showed up anyway. Maybe we can get
the
sign up
problem
corrected next year.
We
will have our Christmas party on January 16th
. I’m
sure Christine will tell us what the tab will be
very soon. I look forward to seeing 100 percent
attendance and a good time for all. There will
be music for those of us who dance, and I’m
sure if asked Carmi will sing for us as he did
last year!
I’m
sure that with the Christmas wrap over we will
have plenty of help for the basketball
games. This fund raiser means a lot of money in
our Admin. fund, guys and gals. I hope everyone
can see
there
way
to helping
in this vital project.
We have invited the kids from the Walkersville
Key club to attend our meeting on the 7th. I hope
some of them can attend and meet their new sponsoring
club.
I
have asked Mac McDonald at the hospital to look
for someone to replace me as the full time van
driver. Any one of you retired people could do
the job and pick up a few sheckles at the same
time. I would also consider a month-on-month-off
or a similar arrangement. I just need a litle
break so I can get on the road again
and see my family in
the
mid-West.
We
have two new members this year so far and
another application in the wings. I also remember
seeing
a name in the cash box at Christmas wrap of a person
who was interested. It would be great to have
four or even more. Think about who you know who
would
be interested in becoming a Kiwanian. Also, please
note that new member Jim Wiggins will be inducted
this coming Wednesday evening during our first
meeting at the Holiday Inn. See below for Jim's
contact info.
Enough
Chatter for this month. God Bless You All. I’m
looking forward to a great year.
Jerry
Health
Watch by Clyde Roney
I
visited Carl Harbaugh on 12/27/03 at Frederick
Memorial Hospital. Seems like he came up from Florida
for a Christmas visit and almost immediately felt
bad. He was taken to the hospital where he was
diagnosed with pneumonia. I understood him to say
that this is the third time this year. He is being
kept for another couple days for more tests and
treatment. Sorry he is not up to par and know that
you'll keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
Glad to see Ellis Stroup back at Kiwanis and also
hope he continues to improve. You know that it
takes something to keep him away from his Kiwanis
meetings.
I sent a card from the club to Carl and also to
Lee Adams. Lee is staying with family in Boonsboro.
Wish I could tell you more about his recovery,
but I do not have a phone number. If you'd like
to send him a card the address is 19902 Thacker
Drive, Boonsboro, MD 21713.
Please let me know if any of our members are under
the weather. The least we should do is send them
a card and I'd like to keep the members up to date
on their health status.
Report
of Foundation Committee by
Dave Maloney
As
directed by the Club, establishing of The Kiwanis
Club of Suburban Frederick Fund (KCSFF) with the
Community
Foundation has been completed. See the
press release here.
The following actions have recently been completed.
1.
Original Club Foundation monies were held in
two money market accounts. The first
at BB&T had a balance of about $4300
and was earning a return of about .25 %. The second
amount ($36,356.68) was held in a money market
at Legg Mason and was earning a return of approximately
.4 %. A check was drawn on the former in the amount
of $3839.00 and deposited into the new Fund,
leaving a balance in the BB&T account of approximately
$500, as required by board action. In addition,
the entire balance of the latter was transferred
from Legg Mason and deposited into the FUND.
2.
The Fund monies are currently being held in a
money market at the Foundation until such time
as we
direct them to move the monies into a balanced
fund which would result in an investment in 60%
equities and 40% fixed income. Like
the BB&T
and the Legg Mason accounts, the return on the
Foundation money market is minimal.
Board, please take action on this issue ASAP.
3. The above referenced Press Release has been
posted on the Community Foundation web page and
was sent to the News Post and the Gazette for their
consideration this morning.
4.
The countersigned FUND agreement will be mailed
to Sec. Rob Summers for filing.
5. Linda Checchia, public relations person at
the Foundation, is anxious to work with us to prepare
additional press releases when major contributions
to the FUND are received or when expenditures are
made.

FMH
Courtesy Van Project by Clyde Roney
We are almost to the end of our third year of
operation of the courtesy van and as of this date
(12/27/03) we have transported 2608 patients from
the hospital to their nursing homes or residences.
I should have put !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! behind that
sentence because that is impressive.
The ones who benefit are:
1-
The patient. They are all glad to leave the hospital
and return "home". They are
advised that this is a volunteer Kiwanis project
and that we are not paid and that they will not
be billed for the transport. This is always a comforting
statement because many fear that they will be getting
another bill which they just can't afford.
2- The family of the patient. They too are glad
to know that no charges are involved and that caring
Kiwanians are taking good care of their loved ones.
3-
The hospital. They now have another bed available
and, at times, there has been a critical shortage
of patient beds. FMH also benefits by not being
billed for patient transports. A comparable service
by professional medics and ambulance is very expensive
and, prior to our involvement, the hospital had
been "picking up the tab" because most
patients could not afford it. Their insurance does
not cover transports after they have been discharged.
Just multiply 2608 by an average of $300.00 - $400.00
per transport by the pros and you can see that
we have really made a big impact on the bottom
line of FMH.
4- The nursing homes. They have their schedules
to maintain and are glad to have their residents
back for meals, activities, medications, etc.
5- The Kiwanis drivers. We have seen so many cases
where we are making a difference and it's good
to know that our efforts are appreciated. The patients
(or their families) sometime send monetary donations
expressing appreciation for the Kiwanis service.
This money goes into a fund for van operation and
maintenance. Probably the greatest benefit to our
drivers is the satisfaction of knowing that we
are appreciated and that we are making a difference.
The hospital also expresses thanks to us through
great dinners and other benefits bestowed upon
all FMH volunteers.
We have benefitted from publicity in The Frederick
News, The Capital Builder, Kiwanis International
Magazine, FMH Monitor, FMH Select Connection, Frederick
Senior and through participation in the In The
Street parade.
Now for the facts of this operation. I have been
so appreciative of the efforts of those who have
been driving these past three years and I think
they know it. However, some of them have had their
own physical problems and have not been able to
drive for periods of time. Also, I don't know of
any members who do not like to take a vacation
once in a while. This week we are down to three
drivers because of the above reasons.
I am sorry other members have not stepped up to
the plate to help out. Yes, I know you work five
days a week and want week-ends to be with your
families. You know what? - me too. If you're available
5 P.M. - 9 P.M. on week days or 9 A.M. - 9 P.M.
Saturday or Sunday you could help a great deal
by joining and being on call once in a while.
During my years in Kiwanis I have never participated
in any activity which has shown me such satisfaction
and positive results. This is why I belong to Kiwanis
- so I can make a difference. How about you?
