Dave's Corner by Pres. Dave Maloney

What a wild close to 2008. Over 1200 manhours of effort paid off at the annual FSK Mall giftwrap. As expected, we were 15% below the records of the last two years, but given the economy, I am still very pleased with the results. I was especially pleased to have the dog teams from Wags for Hope helping draw customers to our table. The teams brought lots of smiles and happiness to the shoppers. WAGs founder Gabe O'Neil even sold Hugs with his Burmese Mountain Dog, Charlie, for $1. In two hours on Dec. 23rd he netted $125 which he put into our cash box! Helped by the Tuscarora Key Clubbers, former member Dr. Austin Rippeon, his wife Faythe and his office secretary, Lisa, closed the tables down at 6:15 on Christmas eve. Then bright and early on Dec. 26th, Larry and his son showed up to remove all our remaining materials from the Mall. Here is a giftwrap photo album.

I can't say enough about the hours you all put in to make this project a success once again. I would be remiss if I did not single out Larry for his dedication in purchasing supplies, then bringing them to the mall on a daily basis so we never ran out. He was there at the beginning to set up and he was there at the end to haul away. And he was frequently there wrapping, too! Did you see the article about him in the Frederick News Post giving giftwrapping instructions?

I would be remiss, too, if I did not make mention of all the volunteers who, once again, lent a hand. From Key Clubbers to Cub Scouts, without their assistance, our small club simply would be unable to conduct this fundraiser.

And, of course, the FSK Mall contributed the space and tables. At Ed Crawford's recommendation, this year the Board decided to do our part in contributing to the Mall's pet Christmas season project: Program Pajamas - a program supplying new PJs and wholesome reading materials to needy children. We had quite a write up about our donation in the Frederick News Post.

We had a cozy gathering of club members and spouses at my house on Jan. 3rd for our annual Christmas Party. Mick Hickman did a great job organizing who brought what and we all enjoyed ourselves with good food, friends, and Holiday Cheer. Past-Pres. Phil recognized the contributions of three of our members, including yours truly with an Outstanding Service Award, Bill Muffi as Kiwanian of the Year, and Mick Hickman with the coveted Hixson Fellowship Award! Watch this award-winning video of the event and a photo album, too!

We have a busy winter coming up. See the above Club Calendar and please plan on participating whenever you can. Note the Mason Dixon Regional Training on March 28th. Let's get a large group together and all go! I'll drive. Here's the registration form.

Note that our Cub Pack is having their Blue and Gold Banquet on Feb. 24th. Please join us for awards and a nice dinner. It is usually held in the evening at Tuscarora Elementary School. Mark you calendar. Let me know, too, if you can attend. I will let the Pack know to send you an invitation.

Plan on helping with the Hope Alive Spring Clean-up in Apriul 28th, too! I'll be attending a volunteer training at Hope Alice on Jan 12th. Want to join me?
