Christine's Connections by Pres. Christine Semon

It looks like we are back in April again, with all the rain showers we have been having the last few days; however, I know that is great for the flowers and hopefully makes up for some of the summer-like days we have been having also. Please be safe driving around, and I am hoping the high waters aren’t effecting your homesteads too much.

This month seems to have flown by and fortunately we had a very diverse group of speakers, thanks to Frank and Glenn’s efforts. Our first presentation was by Mark Williams. He visited us with a great presentation about a course his organization is offering young drivers and their parents to increase there driving skills and learn about things they don’t learn in traditional driving school. The courses are to help improve their hand-eye coordination and hopefully increase their abilities to react to adverse or unusual road situations. He offers the course within a combination of classroom and on the road (or parking lot) training. Mr. Williams claimed that teen survival rates have increased and accident rates have decreased in their students, in the long run. Maybe we could get this information out to our families in the area and some the youth we support, so they and their friends are safer while driving?

The following week, we had invited Cathy Beeler, from the Monocacy National Battlefield, to do a presentation. This was also a significant others night for our club and we had a few visitors join us. Mrs. Beeler offered a wonderful and informative presentation about the history of the Monocacy National Battlefield. She also shared with us some upcoming renovations for the Battlefield, for us to look forward to when we visit in the future. Please be sure to go and visit this local historic landmark!

Next we had Mike Corrigan, a free lance writer with many articles and several awards, to his credit, visit with us. He shared several of his articles and beliefs with us about how service organizations, especially Kiwanis, are like little platoons of democracy and the many good things organizations like ours are offering to the society. During his presentation, he made us laugh, asked us to think a bit deeper and left us with a different way to look at some things we often take for granted.

Though I was not there because of my trip to KI Convention in Montreal, Canada with Ellis, this past week our own Dr. Jim Krysiek hosted Dr. Marty Malone from Mt. St. Mary's who spoke about the impact of globalization on America. I am sure it was very informative and entertaining, as most things from our own Dr. Jim are.

As I write this article, a week early (thanks to Dave who has to go out of town soon), I am reminded of a quote by George Moore: “A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.” With this in mind, I am looking forward to attending the International Convention and representing the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick! I am looking forward to meeting new people, learning new things, gathering great ideas (maybe to implement in our community) and bringing them back HOME to YOU, my friends and fellow Kiwanians in Frederick, Maryland. See you in July!!

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick recently enjoyed learning about the local Monocacy National Battlefield and the Battle of the Monocacy - also known as the "Battle that Saved Washington." Shown are speaker Cathy S. Beeler, Monocacy Battlefield Chief of Resource Education & Visitor Services and Glenn Magaha, club speaker host.

Mike Corrigan, staff writer for www.continentaldivide.us, spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick recently about Volunteerism - Democracy's Little Platoons. Mr. Corrigan contends that volunteer organizations such as Kiwanis can counter America's precipitous political polarization and cultural antagonisms. Shown (L to R) are Mike Corrigan and club speaker host Frank Parker.

Dr. Marty Malone, sociology teacher at Mt. St. Mary's Univ., recently explained to the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick the cost and benefits of Globalization, and its impact on the economy of America and the welfare of its workers. Shown (L to R) are Marty Malone receiving a miniature Kiwanis bell from club speaker host, Dr. Jim Krysiek.
