Christine's Connections by Pres. Christine Semon

Well my Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick, welcome to the beginning of our Maryland summer!! It is starting off pretty warm and sticky, so please do your best to stay healthy, cool and as hydrated as possible!!

June seemed to go by very quickly for me this year. My job kept me very busy this month, since it was the last month of the Fiscal Year. We needed to spend our monies or loose it, thus I was very busy spending the state's monies, via my non profit organization, for the families I work for. And now, as of July 1, a new fiscal year is beginning. The fun never stops!

On June 14, we had Hannah Thompson and Curtis Rhoderick from the MD 4-H Dairy Judging Team visit our club, and from what I heard from the members in attendance, it was a very good presentation. I had a family commitment and was unable to attend our meeting, so Phil P. ran the meeting that week and did a great job (from what he reported!) I apologize for missing this great presentation as I heard it was very entertaining and informative.

On Wednesday, June 20th, the Divisional Council Meeting (DCM) was hosted by LTG Fred Lohnes and the Kiwanis Club of Mount Airy. Thanks to Ellis, Phil and Larry for attending it with me! During the meeting, we voted in Bill Brickman from the Hagerstown Club as LTG Designate for 2007-2008 and voted Donna Ohler from the Westminster Club as LTG Elect for 2008-2009. Fred also reminded us about the upcoming District Convention in Rockville, from August 17-19. It is a great way to learn more about the events and projects that Kiwanis International and our District is involved in, and meet and mingle with Kiwanians from the area.

At our club meeting on June 21st, our own Charlie Mertz shared with us about his experiences on WWII Destroyers and current reunions he has been attending thru the years. Thanks Charlie for an entertaining and informative presentation!

On June 28th we were again honored by a member sharing some more recent experiences with us. Terry Proescholdt shared with us slides of his recent trip to France and Germany with his wife and a hand full of students they chaperoned. It sounds like a great time was had by all!!! Thanks again Terry!!

As a reminder, please keep Glenn Magaha and Ken Dell in your thoughts and prayers. Recent updates are encouraging and they both seem to be getting closer to being more stable and healthier. A little bird has told us that Eric Gatrell might be visiting with us again soon. We knew he couldn’t stay away very long!!

As this year is winding down for me, as this club's President, I am starting to think about new and future goals for our club and myself. When one thinks about goals and future aspirations, I am reminded of a quote from George Bernard Shaw: “Imagine what you desire; Will what you imagine and then Create what you will.” Maybe we can ponder this as we go into the heat of the summer and towards the new Kiwanis year, which will be starting in the near future, on October 1st, 2007. What would you like to see our wonderful Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick try that might be different, new and possibly outside the box in the future, to help us continue to grow and give back to our community and the children of the world??!? Feel free to discuss these ideas with other club members, myself and next year's President Phil Pople in the near future!! Have a wonderful month!!

Oh, by the way, keep an eye out for Larry and Dave's announcement of the date for our annual club picnic which will be held at Larry's House of Fun in late summer.

Terry's Travel Log of European Trip a Hit!

Members recently shared in an exciting journey as member Terry Proescholdt presented his travel log of a recent trip taken with his wife and her Wind Ensemble across Northern Europe. Castles, cathedrals, ancient walled towns and, of course, Manneken Pis in Brussels (left), were their favorite places to visit. Shown right, Pres. Christine thanks Terry for his presentation.

Dave and Barb Maloney Celebrate Arrival of New Granddaughter

Barb and Dave Maloney announce the birth of their granddaughter, Madeline Gale Maloney born July 29th at FMH to their son, Jason, and his wife, Jodi. Those in the know frequently comment on how little Madeline's good looks are obviously inherited from her paternal grandfather.

WWII Destroyer Escort Duty Makes for Interesting Speaker Program

Charlie Mertz, a U.S. Navy WWII veteran and member of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick, recently shared his war time experiences aboard the USS Gustafson (DE 182) both in the Pacific as well as in the Atlantic where his ship is credited with sinking three German submarines. Pictured (L to R) are Charlie Mertz showing a photo of the Gustafson to club members Paul Sheets, and Frank Parker.

Frederick County Kids National Dairy Judging Champs!

Dairy judging was the speaker program at a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick. National Dairy Judging Contest winners Curtis Rhoderick and Hannah Thompson, both from Frederick County and members of the Maryland 4-H Dairy Judging Team, explained what they look for when judging dairy cows. Soon after their presentation, the pair were on their way to Edinburgh, Scotland with the other two members of their team to participate in the International Dairy Judging Contest. Shown (L to R) are Curtis Rhoderick and Hannah Thompson being greeted by club member, Paul Sheets.
