Pres. Dave Maloney
This past month, Bill Muffi and I assisted with the Jake Sclater Golf Tournament at Maple Run Golf Course in Thurmont. Young Jake suffers from Angelman's Syndrome and this annual fundraiser assists with expenses associated with special activities designed to help Jake improve his motor skills and muscular develooment. I had not seen Jake in over a year, and it was heart warming to see him for the first time walking on his own (with assistance nearby "To avoid another face plant," his Dad, Dustin, says.) Pictured below, I am holding Jake on my lap as his mother, Michelle, looks on. It was encouraging to see so many Sclater family members and long-time friends and supporters turn out to paticipate in this worthwhile effort.

Remember our Cook Out scheduled for this coming Saturday, July 11th at Amvets in Middletown. It's will be great fun! Bring your food, games, and even a friend or two.
Also, the Capital District Convention is scheduled for Dover, DE Aug. 21-24. I usually leave Friday around noon and return Sunday afternoon. You are welcome to go with me. Visit the DCON web site for more information.
Thanks to Mick for another month of great upcoming speakers. And Joe and Bill for the work on the upcoming cook out.
And to Frank for his recent tips on making use of our soon-to-be-redesigned club business cards. I've posted his tips in the below article. All your efforts toward membership growth are keenly needed. Our membership is below the 20-member threshold which causes us to be added to the Division's watch list. This causes grief, of course, for our hard working Div. 9 LTG Donna Ohler, as well as for our Cap. Dist. Tustee, Jim Jacobs.
I am thrilled that Debbi coordinated our club's membership in the Frederick Chamber of Commerce and that she and Frank are our official representatives - they's already attended some meetings. Debbi is careful to point out, though, that while she and Frank are the official liaisons with the CofC, all members of the Club are entitled to participate in all CofC activities. We will keep you informed of upcoming CofC activities in which you might wish to participate, such as the periodic business card exchanges.
Our new meeting location at the Elks seems to be to everyone's liking, and the staff is very accomodating. You should all know that we now keep Ellis' projector stored on top of a cart in the manager's (Patrick's) locked office. So, should it ever be needed, you all know where it is. No laptop computer, though. Just the projector and a set of speakers. |
Margi Mott Explains the Deleplaine Arts Center
Margi Mott, Assistant to the Director for Public Relations at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center in downtown Frederick, attended a recent club meeting to describe the many programs offered by the center for the public's benefit. "The Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center provides the Frederick region with educational opportunities and experiences in the visual arts through classes, exhibits and programs," she said. In addition to on-going exhibits, numerous classes are available including for adults, teens, and young people. Left to right, club program chair, Mick Hickman, reviews an Arts Center brochure with Margi Mott.

Frank's Famous Tips
If you keep 2 or 3 Kiwanis business cards in your wallet or purse, its easier to bring up Kiwanis. If you having a good conversation with someone, the physical act of reaching for a card can make the flow of the conversation toward Kiwanis easy and natural. Your might say, "By the way, here is my card. If you talk to anyone interested in helping youth, please give it to them."
Or, "If you or anyone you know is interested in doing some rewarding work with kids, give them this card and invite them to a free dinner to show them what we're all about."
Remember, any opportunity to discuss Kiwanis helps to spread the word about our goals and mission! Don't think of it as a big deal. Once you successfully give someone a business card, it will be easier the next time.
Remember also, the first discussion about Kiwanis doesn't have to be about joining the club, and probably should not be. Rather, use the "Your welcome to be my guest for dinner to learn more about what we do." approach. Invitations to join can be done later after a susbequent converstation. You make the call! |
