Words of Wisdom by
Pres. Jerry Jenkins
July
has arrived and I hope all have had their fill of Hamburgers,
Hotdogs and Beer. I know I have. What would we do without
the opportunity to celebrate the birth of the most wonderful
country in the world with our family and friends? Fireworks
are pretty nice too although rain doesn’t help.
We
had a pretty busy month with our Filly presentation and the
Governor, Governor elect, past Governor and last but not least
our own Lt Governor also being present. A good time was had
by all and. If you didn’t know, Dave Maloney stayed
up all night creating a web
site commemorating the occasion. Bravo Zulu, Dave.
It’s
time for our new Officer’s to start training for their
year in the chairs. Ken Dell as President elect has his plate
full in particular. Good luck Ken.
New
membership is a critical task for us at this time and for
our future as Frederick Suburban Kiwanis. Our club is really
much smaller than the roster implies. Has everyone really
counted the active members and those who have the ability
to participate in all our projects? I am very proud that so
few can accomplish so much. Our fund raising projects are
very time-consuming and require all to participate if we are
to continue amassing the money to fund all the projects we
have in the budget. We particularly need help for Vern Simmons
and the fund raising committee. Please, can we have some people
step forward and volunteer to assist in the planning and administration
of this committee? It is imperative that we give Vern more
assistance than he is getting. Thank you all.
I
will be asking for nominations for the Delegates that will
attend the District convention in Roanoke in August. If we
can elect those people on 7 July we can then vote on their
instructions for the convention at our board meeting in August.
They have to vote on the new district leadership as well as
the important issues involved in reshaping the Capital District.
These are important issues, and I hope we can have our three
delegates selected this Wednesday.
Enough
for one month. I want to save some for the August and September
newsletters.
Yours
in Kiwanis,
Jerry |
"Diamond"
Given to Sarah Roney
Past
Div. 19 Distinguished Lt. Gov. Deborah New graciously donated
a registered Appaloosa colt named NHFKelo Dark Star (nicknamed
"Diamond") to 29 year-old Sarah Roney, a 2003 International
Special Olympic Equestrian and granddaughter of Suburban Frederick
Kiwanian Clyde Roney. On
June 16, 2004 Deborah attended a special weekly meeting of
the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick to formally present
the filly "Diamond" to Sarah. Carolyn Roney, Sarah's
mother and Clyde's daughter, made the acceptance speech noting
that the English language is inadequate to express the appreciation
she and Sarah feel for this most generous gift. Deborah New
also made some remarks, noting that Diamond will be cared
for by Deborah and Sarah and will be used for the benefit
of others in a therapeutic riding program for the physically
handicapped. She is pleased and moved that she has found such
a good home for Diamond, who Deborah was unable to take with
her as she moves to South Africa with fiancee, Peter.
Also
in attendance in addition to many club members were Capital
District Gov. Linwood Watson, Gov. Elect Warren Kane, Div.
9 Lt. Gov. Art Riley, Past. Gov. John Tyner, club member and
Cap. Dist. Sec. Ellis Stroup, and several Kiwanians from other
clubs...read

Simao, Training Specialist for the USDA, Plant Protection and
Quarantine Division, gave a presentation on the history and
responsibilities of the USDA and talked about various threats
to American Agricultural and our natural resources. |
Local
high schoolers, James Doggett and Jamie Shutta, were recently
sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick to attend
a H.O.B.Y.s
(Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership) seminar at Mt. St. Mary's.
They visited our club to express their appreciation for our
support and to report on the highlights of their seminar.
