Phil's Podium by Pres. Phil Pople

Well, it looks like Spring has finally sprung in good old Frederick. Normally with summer coming on, our club slows down a little as far as planned activities, but not this summer. June 1st kicked off our membership drive month set up by Bill. If I remember right we have $200 in the pot to be given to the person who brings in the most members. The contest runs until June 30th.

Of course, on the June 14 in conjunction with the membership drive we have our night of promotion and membership recruitment at the Keys ball game. I'm going to be honest here, our club shelled out $1250 to sponsor this event. The main purpose was to give our club publicity, let the public know what Kiwanis is all about, and maybe sign up some new members. At last count we have only 11 people signed up to go. That is maybe half of our club. I was hoping to get all hands involved. I know people have commitments, but this has been planned since January. What does it say about our club when we host an event and only half the club shows up? We need people to man the tables and pass out brochures at the game. And also to answer any questions.

June 7th is our 1st annual pig roast at the Middletown Amvets. Party starts at 3:00. Ellis was kind enough to buy the pig, and Charlie is buy the beer. Let's give a big hand for the two of them. Please see Debbie if your not sure what to bring. Should be a good time, and doesn't matter if it rains, were covered.

After the Keys game, we really need to concentrate on the live/silent auction set for September. Since we have run a couple of silent auctions, we know that one or two people can't possibly run it by themselves. We need EVERYBODY'S HELP. If you have items to donate, or you have friends that have something they can donate, please see Bill. We will really be pushing this throughout the summer, so please keep this in the front of your mind.

I would also like to thank Christine and Debbie for the wonderful job of pulling off the middle school appreciation night last month. It went off without a hitch. And I would also like to thank Christine for pulling off last week's sponsored youth night. I think the kids and their parents had a good time. Hopefully Bill's speech might sway a couple of parents to join us.

All right guys and gals, time to strap it on. We have a really busy summer in front of us. And we need everyone to join in. Thank you.

Your humble President,
Phil

Club Holds SLP Night

The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick supports several Sponsored Leadership Program (SLP) clubs within Frederick county middle schools, high schools and at Mt. St. Mary's University. With the assistance of a school adviser, SLP clubs provide service to the community and teach leadership skills to their members. Recently, the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick paid tribute to the SLP clubs it sponsors and to the schools and school advisors that make the clubs possible. Pictured from from left to right: Linda Caron ( Middletown Builders Club adviser), Mitch Earle (Middletown Builders club President), Michelle Roberts (Walkersville Key Club adviser), Mariel Pfister (Walkersville Key Club President), Steffi Yen (Tuscarora Key Club President), Beth Geerlings (Tuscarora Key Club co-adviser), Beth Mummert (Tuscarora Key Club Co-adviser), and Suburban Frederick Club Pres., Phil Pople. Kiwanis International is one of the largest community-service organizations dedicated primarily to helping the children of the world. For more information about local Kiwanis clubs, contact Frank Parker at vats3@verizon.net of 301-668-8698. (Thanks, Christine, for coordinating this entire event - a job well done!)

Suburban Frederick and Westminster Clubs to Hold Recruitment Drive at Keys Baseball Game June 14th
by Frank Parker

The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick together with the Westminster Kiwanis Club is hosting a special KIWANIS evening at the Frederick Keys minor league baseball game being played at Harry Grove stadium (right) in Frederick, MD on June 14, 2008. The evening is an integral part of the club's plan for the recruitment of new members in 2008.

The event will feature a large KIWANIS banner that all attending must pass and will see as they enter the park. There will be a table with a similar banner above it just as people turn to toward the third base side of the stadium. The table will be the place where club members can hand out KIWANIS literature, sell raffle tickets and/or invite people to visit our clubs.

The game will begin with Capital District Governor Art Riley throwing out the first pitch and giving a short statement to the crowd about Kiwanis. Two viewings of Kiwanis photos will take place on the large screen over left center field and two 20-second Kiwanis Public Service Announcements will be broadcast during the game.

The Keys' publicity staff will include this special Kiwanis Night in their media promotions on the web, in mass emails and on internet radio. The evening will conclude with fireworks at the end of the game and hopefully some new members in both clubs. The evening is expected to draw 4,000 to 5,000 fans.
