Dave's Corner by Pres. Dave Maloney

We were all saddened to hear of the passing of club member and Past-Pres. Ken Dell (see below.) Ken was a dedicated Kiwanian - never missing a meeting, participating nearly every day with the FSK Mall Giftwrap, and volunteering every Saturday at his favorite activity - the 4-H Therapeutic Riding. We will miss Ken. I know I speak for the entire membership when I express my sincerest condolences to Ken's son, Matt, and to the Dell family.

My thanks to Bill Muffi and the rest of the Board for taking the bull by the horns and resolving our meeting place dilemma during my absence. Here we are now at our new meeting place, the Elks Lodge. And we changed our meeting date, too. No longer will be gather on Thursday evening. From now on, it will be Tuesdays, instead. I look forward to meeting at the Elks for years to come.

June 19th is the Jake Sclater Golf Tournament in Thurmont. I will be going to help. Care to join me? Jake is a little boy I took care of for a while as part of our club's Special Inspiration project a couple years ago. Jake suffers from Angelman's Syndrome. See http://www.justforjake.org/.

Remember our Cook Out scheduled for July 11th at Amvets in Middletown. It's will be great fun!

Also, the Capital District Convention is scheduled for Dover, DE Aug. 21-24. I usually leave Friday around noon and return Sunday afternoon. You are welcome to go with me. Visit the DCON web site for more information.

What a great time we had at last month's Middle School Most-Improved Student Award Night. The Quality Inn meeting room was packed with members, students, family and school administrators for a evening filled with stories of stand-out students improving themselves during their years of Middle School. Award winners (below) received a plaque as well as a $25 Borders Bookstore gift card. Thanks to Debbi Matthews and Brenda Edwards for organizing the event!

Speaking of a "stand-out," - young Jason Polansky (below), blind since birth. made quite an impression on us last month when he, accompanied by his mother, Susan, shared his experiences as a blind person. He is quite a historian on the development of aids for the blind, most of which center around learning and writing in Braille. He is a well-spoken 13-year old who felt very comfortable in front of the crowd as he demonstrated several pieces of equipment he uses.
