| Jerry's
Words of Wisdom by
Pres. Jerry Jenkins
Can
it be that it is June already? I finally got a vacation from
the Hospital Van and went out West. I had a great time and
attended my son’s graduation, Magna Cum Laude, from
college. He graduated on Saturday and started on his Master’s
on Monday. He’s a real glutton for punishment, but I
am very proud of him. He promised me years ago that he would
get his Degree.
June
will be a very busy month, Ladies and Gentlemen. We will of
course have our Board meeting on the 2nd... On the 16th will
be Clyde’s proud day with the presentation of the Horse
to his Granddaughter. That will be a significant-others evening
and will also be attended by Capital District Governor Linwood
Watson, the Governor-elect, Warren Kane, and our own Div.
9 Lt Governor, Art Riley. We are also inviting all other clubs
in Division Nine to attend. Please dress accordingly. Coat
and tie would be nice for the gentlemen.
Lt
Governor Art will have his division meeting on the 9th at
Mt Airy. They meet at 6:30 at the Seniors’ center. It
was suggested at our meeting on the 26th that we attend as
a club. Therefore our meeting will be held in Mount Airy that
week. Please advise Charley of your intention to attend so
we can forewarn Mount Airy and let them know how many will
be there. We will also be electing the future Lt Governor
at that time. I would really appreciate an all out attendance
for this event. I will send an “E” to all as a
further reminder. I think we can probably car pool a lot of
people from the old State Police barrack parking lot.
We
have our new officer’s and board in place for the coming
year. In case you haven’t heard, Pat Haley will be going
thru the chairs. I know he will do an outstanding job for
the Club. Congratulations Pat and welcome aboard. I look forward
to assisting you in any way I can.
For
all not at the last meeting the resignation of Bob Kane was
read. I’m sorry to lose Bob and we will need some help
on the fund raising committee to replace him. Any volunteers?
We also need someone to ram rod the silent auction this year.
Last year’s chair for the event, Phil Pople, cannot
help as he must help his wife, Cindy, through an illness.
We are all praying for you Cindy.
Seems
all the old guy’s are moving south. Clyde announced
he is building a home in Florida, and I heard a rumor that
another member had purchased a home there. We will really
have to work hard to replace these guys.
I
understand that Eric has hurt his back and is having a hard
time getting around. Hope you feel better soon, Eric. Age
does those things to you Eric.
Have
a great month everyone and God Bless,
Regards,
Jerry |
Van
Project - I'm Moving to FL by
Clyde Roney Thanks
to all, especially Carmi, for carrying on in my recent absence.
Vacations will continue to leave us short handed so any relief
you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
While
in Florida, Wynne and I acted on an old pipe dream and bought
a building lot. For the past five years we have been looking
at real estate in Florida with the thought that some day we
would move. Well, "some day" has arrived. We will
soon begin construction and probably move near the end of
the year.
This
brings us to a new situation. Who will manage the van program
when we leave? I have enjoyed doing it since we began the
program and it has been rewarding to me as well as to all
who have benefited. It's a unique program and has received
much publicity because of what we're accomplishing. I will
continue to "manage" things until we leave, but
ask all of you to consider helping out by taking over. Give
it a thought - PLEASE. I'll be glad to get a feedback with
your thoughts.

Middletown
High School Key Club Says "Thanks"
Dear
Kiwanis,
All of us here in Middletown High School Key Club are extremely
grateful for your contribution toward our District Convention
expenses. It allowed some of our less fortunate members to
go on the trip, which otherwise might have proven too costly.
Nary a member of our club did not have a good time at the
convention. There were a few minor complaints about the formal
dress from the males, of course, but there were no major injuries
while dressing in the somewhat foreign clothing. The women,
on the other hand, seemed to love readying themselves for
each and every event, or so one would surmise from the length
of time spent doing so.
The Marriott hotel continues to be a phenomenally perfect
place to hold the convention. Key Clubbers are subjected to
a level of luxury beyond the norm; vending machines decorate
every floor, large ballrooms serve well for meetings and dances,
and a continental breakfast awaits anyone stoic enough to
rub the sleep from their eyes around 7:00 A.M. The dinner
provided for the banquet lived up to the hotel's bourgeois
ambience; it may as well have been in a five-star restaurant.
One aspect of the hotel that was truly astonishing was the
comfort and privacy of the individual rooms. Normally, you'd
expect to hear everything that occurs below you, above you,
and to either side, but the walls were apparently insulated
with more than the standard amount of styrofoam. The beds
were also notably comfortable. Instead of sheets that bend,
a mattress that squeaks, and a pillow stuffed with gravel,
the accommodations were much like home, allowing every convention
attendee a good night's sleep - and we needed it, if we wanted
to eat in the morning.
The Caucus hearings were particularly enlightening this year:
our club members asked thought-provoking, relevant questions,
and the candidates' replies were quite reflective of the proficiency
with which they might perform their duties after election.
Overall, the candidates did very well; their speeches were
well-written and well-rehearsed. There was not a single complaint
of boredom from any member during the span of the entire caucus,
which left many of us substantially surprised.
The clubbers seemed to be at their epitome on the dance floor.
The dances relaxed the occasionally tense, formal atmosphere
of the other gatherings. Here, everyone could wind down after
a long day and cut loose. Of course, anyone who wouldn't dance
was harassed into doing so. Some of the wallflowers turned
out to be better dancers than they thought.some we probably
should have left alone. Truly, though, there is nothing more
beautiful than an entire ballroom full of people doing the
"Electric Slide." It is mechanical, fluent, synchronized.
Except for one man in the center who seemed intent on bringing
the "Mashed Potato" back to life.
As icing on the cake, all attendees were given several opportunities
to hear the hilarious rantings of Judson Laipply. Really,
"participate in" would probably be a better word
choice than "hear," because the audience never felt
left out in his sessions. His "Evolution of Dance"
routine had the entire district membership roaring with hearty
guffaws. Mr. Laipply certainly went above and beyond keeping
his listeners awake - the probability of forgetting his onstage
antics is doubtful.
Among other events that may have been left out, we were able
to see our current Lieutenant Governor and a member of our
school become the District Secretary, the retirement of Mr.
Walt Rudy, and an exceptional group of performers during the
talent show. Every one of our club members thought the several-hour
drive from Middletown to Richmond was worth it, and all those
who will remain next year are looking forward to the next
annual District Convention.
Again, thank you for your overwhelming generosity. We are
all grateful.

Horse
to be Presented at Special Club Program
by Clyde Roney
The
date of June 16, 2004. has been confirmed for presentation
of the above mentioned Appaloosa filly, "Diamond",
to Sarah Roney at our Kiwanis meeting. Past Div. 19 Distinguished
Lt. Gov. (and donor) Deborah New will be here to make the
transfer and to be our speaker for the evening. Carolyn Roney,
Sarah's mother and my daughter, will make the "acceptance
speech" - short, but totally sincere and appreciative
you can be sure. Capital District Gov. Linwood Watson will
also attend as well as will our Div. 9 Lt. Gov. Art Riley
and Capital Dist. Gov-Elect Warren Kane. I am asking that
we make this a spouses night as well as a sponsored interclub
opportunity. The Frederick News Post will be invited to bring
a reporter/photographer and the event will also be publicized
in the Capital District's eBuilder. This will be a totally
different program, and one which illustrates that Kiwanians
are very caring, giving and selfless.

Middle
School Student Appreciation Night
The
Kiwanis Club of Suburban
Frederick (MD) recently held its annual Middle School Student
Appreciation Night to recognize the most-improved students from
the eleven Middle Schools within Frederick County. In attendance
was a nominated student from each of the schools. Students were
accompanied by proud family and friends as well as school representatives.
The Annual Most-Improved Student Award recognizes that 7th or
8th grade student from each school who, in the opinion of the
school's Principal and staff, had shown significant improvement
in such areas as deportment, participation, attitude and interpersonal
skills since first arriving in 6th grade. Improved grades are
not a prerequisite for consideration for this award; however,
an improvement in grades is a positive side-effect that almost
always accompanies improvement in the above-mentioned areas.
Each student was introduced and their achievements described
by their respective school administrator. This often-emotional
insight into the improved lives of these young people is the
highlight of the evening. (Left to right. (Standing) Jordan
Mathis (Middletown MS), Darrius Moore (Ballenger Creek MS),
Heather Barton (Walkersville MS), German Quijano (West Frederick
MS), Jabari Brown (Gov. Thomas Johnson MS), Trevin Harris (Monocacy
MS) (Sitting) Tamara Nunn (Oakdale MS), James Wright (Windsor
Knolls MS), Ryan Shifflett (New Market MS), Hilary Louise Blake
(Thurmont MS), Stephani Marcum (Brunswick MS). |
