Ken's Korner by Pres. Ken Dell

Spring is just around the corner! So are two major fundraisers for our club, the Shrimp Feed and the Art Auction. Ladies and gentleman, we NEED YOUR HELP! I know that some of you don’t agree with everything we do and/or how it is done but the bottom line is these are club projects that will only be successful with your involvement. Even if a “ton” of money is not raised the project can be a success because we learned from it! If our club is to continue to prosper and help people in our community, especially the children, then we ALL must become involved. I realize that not everyone can come out and put in a lot of “grunt” hours, but you have friends, neighbors, relatives and church-mates that you can talk to about buying a ticket to an event and how the money is used to benefit our community. There is also behind the scenes help needed such as helping with mailings, ordering supplies, making phone calls, etc. that need doing that you can do to free up people for the grunt stuff. Right now we need to sell tickets. It is very important to get a crowd at the Art Auction so there are sufficient bidders. The price is right, $10 per person or $15/couple, so please talk/ask people! Also, are you coming? These are club projects and they need your support. Remember “the times they are a’changing” and we will be left in the dust if we can’t evolve too.

This leads to another subject — membership. Our numbers are dwindling for many reasons, the largest of which is lack of new member candidates. I am as guilty as the next person in recruitment success, but I still talk up Kiwanis whenever I can. As soon as Eric gets healthy again, look for a whiz-bang of activity to help you. In the meantime there is nothing stopping you but yourself from asking. Are you a human being capable of conversation with another human being? Then get out there and talk Kiwanian.

As you know, a committee has been established to discuss a merger with the Downtown club. Members are Dave Maloney, Christine Semon, Ellis Stroup, Ed Crawford, Jerry Jenkins, Eric Gatrell, Rob Summers, Leslie Davidson and Larry Fellows. They will meet to list the Pros and Cons. They will meet with the Downtown committee before long. I know some of you initially have feelings one war or the other. Let Dave Maloney, Chair, know of your concerns and suggestions. It is a topic at least worth considering. Sterling Bollinger is the Chair of Downtown's committee. He and Dave will be meeting initially in the not-to-distant future.

Also, there is a Pancake Breakfast at Mt. Airy on Sat. March 19. For $5.00 you sure can get a lot to eat. Be there!

‘Till next time, Ken.

Club Wins Award
At the recently-held Williamsburg Capital District Mid-Winter Conference, the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick won the Runner-Up Award (a.k.a. "Second Place") in the Best Club Bulletin category!

Ellis, Christine and Dave at Mid-Winter

Club members Ellis, Christine and Dave represented Suburban Frederick at this year's Capital District Mid-Winter Conference recently held in Williamsburg, VA. Due to the recent District restructuring, this in all probability will be the last District-wide Mid-Winter Conference to be held. Over 500 attended this event which was packed with business, training, good food and just plain fun. Make plans now for the 2005 Capital District Convention scheduled for August 3-7, 2005 in Hunt Valley, MD.

Mark Gaver Presented with Hixson Fellow Award
In recognition of his services to the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick, the club awarded member Mark Gaver the coveted Hixson Fellow. Div. 9 Lt. Gov. Art Riley presented Mark with his Hixsxon at a recent club meeting.

Gov. Warren Kane Visits Div. 9
At a star-studded event hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown, Capital District Gov. Kane and his wife, Dale, made their official visit to Div. 9. Shown right are Gov. Warren and his wife Dale, left, being welcomed by Hagerstown Club Pres. (and Hagerstown Mayor) William Breichner as Div. Lt. Gov. Art Riley and his wife, Vicki, look on. Shown right is Suburban Frederick's contingent. Patrick Haley, Dave Maloney, Christine Semon, Pres. Ken Dell and Rob Summers. [Leaving early (ahemm) Patrick and Rob had to be "added" to this image. Sorry, but that was the best I could do - Dave.]
