Christine's Connections by Pres. Christine Semon

As we ease into March and the beginning of Spring (yea!) we, as a club, have much to look forward to. With all our wonderful 'Maryland' weather who knows how March will be this year. Please try to stay warm and healthy!

In February we were entertained by several wonderful presentations including our own Phil Pople (right) talking about his days in the movies (many years ago!). There was also Hossam Elouan speaking about life in Egypt, and Mike Koval with his moving presentaion about Special Inspirations, Inc. - a Frederick County organization dedicated to assisting families with severly handicapped children. If you missed them, shame on you! Hopefully you can stop by in March for the upcoming presentations that Larry Fellows and Dave Maloney are putting together! At the end of February, several of us (thanks Phil, Dave and Ken) also went to Cub Scout Pack 285's Blue and Gold Celebration. It was a great presentation and seven Weblos were awarded their Arrows of Light. Great job guys!!

Sprinkled amongst our meetings this month will be our 1st Mid-winter conference on March 4th, under the new Capitol District Regional structure. It will be held in Columbia, MD and should be a great time. I know I am slotted to talk about HOBY and the AKtion clubs, on two of the four sessions. Come on by to listen and learn and see some Kiwanians from Divisions 9. 12 and 14 that you haven't seen for a while!!!

On March 23rd, I am looking forward to our Kiwanis Family Night in Taneytown, MD. All Kiwanis clubs (9 of them) are invited with their sponsored clubs to this event. This includes 3 Circle K's, 9 Key Clubs, 1 Builders Club and 1 AKtion club in our division! I know all our sponsored clubs have been invited (thanks for your assistance Jim Kryseik) and they are working on getting as many members to attend as possible. I have been working with LTG Jim Jacobs on this event and it promises to be a good time for all! Please let me know by March 9th if you are able to attend, so we can get accurate numbers to the facility in Taneytown (Fire Company Activities Building).
The next week, on March 30, we will be officially Chartering Tuscarora High Schools Key Club at our club meeting. Yea! This event also promises to be a joyful celebration, so please plan to attend and celebrate as we officially welcome them into our Kiwanis family.

As we are all doing whatever we do in our parts of our community and world, please continue to share yourself and your gifts!! Talk to your friends about what your are up to, share with them what your passions are, and invite them to our meetings to share how you are contributing to your community, through Kiwanis. As Marion Wright Edelman once said, "Service is the very purpose of life. It is the rent we pay for being on this planet." Our club does a lot of great things for our community, lets keep sharing and spreading the word!

I am looking forward to Spring, with warmer weather, new flowers and singing birds. Let's work on spreading the word about our great family and organization. In conclusion, as a Chinese proverb says: "A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song."

Div. 9 Lt. Gov. Jim Jacobs reports:

CONGRATULATIONS! On Thursday, February 23rd I had the distinct honor and pleasure of inducting FOUR new members into the Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown. This club is getting younger all the time, through attracting many new members who are still in their 20’s and 30’s. What a great sign of future club health and strength!

On Thursday, March 2nd I will have the distinct honor and pleasure of inducting TWO new members into the Kiwanis Club of Cumberland. This comes on the heels of another new member whom I inducted last fall. Good work, Cumberland!

K-Family Night
Please visit your Circle K Clubs, your Key Clubs, your Builders Clubs, and your AKtion Clubs this week. Offer them an evening at the K-Family Night as your guests. It is also appropriate to invite their school administrators and faculty advisors.

Please give me a head count by March 10th, covering attendance by your own Kiwanis club and by your sponsored clubs. Cost is $15 per person.

We will be meeting at the Activity Building of the Taneytown Fire Company, which is located in Taneytown Memorial Park on the west side of town. The festivities will commence at 6:30 p.m. with dinner entrees of roast beef and fried chicken.
(Attached is a map that shows the location of the Activity Building.)

After dinner and introductions, the emcee will call upon a spokesperson from each Kiwanis Club, who is asked to relate one or two club success stories. Then that spokesperson will introduce a representative from each of its sponsored organizations, who will give brief remarks on its activities.
We will conclude with remarks by Kiwanis Capital District Governor Yvonne Holley who, in spite of her extremely busy travel schedule, has added this event to it. Thank you so very much, Governor Yvonne!
Final Notes: Clubs will be given an opportunity to make announcements of upcoming activities and events. Also, clubs should feel free to sell raffle tickets, etc, to other attendees, before and after the program of the evening.

Hossam Elouan, Fulbright Scholar and Middle Eastern Specialist, screenwriter and film critic from Egypt, recently addressed our club and discussed how America and Americans are viewed in Egypt and in the Middle East. He also showed a short film focusing on the issue of male spousal dominance as expressed in the Egyptian culture.

Michael Koval, President of Special Inspirations, Inc., recently spoke to our club regarding Special Inspirations which is a charitable organization helping parents care for severely handicapped children of Frederick County by offering respite care, resource referrals, and mothers' helpers. Respite care offers immediate help to families seeking a break from the daunting task of caring for these special children. Hoping to reduce the paperwork and runaround, resource referrals is a one-stop shopping for handicapped services. Mothers helpers service provides parents with helpers for daily chores. Volunteers can help with daily things parents just can't seem to find the time to do, such as laundry, cleaning, mowing grass, picking up prescriptions, food shopping, etc. Mike was accompanied by his wife, Sandy and their daughter Brittany as well as by Kim Lanham and her son, Nathan. Pictured (front row) are Brittany and Nathan. Standing are Phil Pople, Sandy Koval, Kim Lanham, and Mike Koval.
