Mick's Corner by Pres. Mick Hickman
First of all, congratulations to our Kiwanian of the Year, Eric Gatrell! We are so proud of all you have done for our club, Eric!
Are you feeling like spring is just around the corner? The club is starting to "come out of hibernation" and gearing up for some work. Or should I say that Peter has come out of hibernation and seems to be working overtime and lining up some projects. He's really proving to be probably one of the best people I've ever seen to get things done. He's got a long to-do list four our April 9 Hope Alive service project.
We've got Little League starting up as well. Deb will give us more info tomorrow night. I enjoy seeing the kids play. For those who knew Skip, my late husband, he loved Little League and was a coach for a couple of years. I asked him why he loved it so much. His answer was simple. The kids played the purest form of baseball and were out there purely for the love of the game and the fun of it. Whether the team was winning or losing he made sure every kid on the team played. I learned to love Little League. I'll be in the stands cheering for the kids on opening day. Consider joining me.
And last but not least, March 12 is the Mason Dixon Mid-Winter Conference in Columbia. Lt. Gov. Renee & I have been e-mailing each other about this. I was so excited when she told me Suburban Frederick & Greater Westminter had the most attending. When I asked her how many from my club will be going, she told me 2 (Ellis & me). I was dumbfounded. I was expecting at least 4. I'm bringing some more applications tomorrow night in the hopes that I can get at least a couple more to come. You can also download the registration form here. It's really a good meeting to attend. The programs range from Club Operations to Fund Raising. In fact, our own Christine will be heading a class about Sponsored Leadership & HOBY. Think about it and let's have a caravan down to Columbia on March 12. See you at tonight's meeting! |

Community Service Efforts Spring Ahead!
by Peter Brehm
Community Service efforts are progressing nicely for the spring. Thus far, our Club is planning on:
- A service project for Hope Alive in Sabillasville is confirmed for Saturday, April 9 (rain date: April 16). Several club members are primed to bring rototillers plus tools to dig out / hoe weeds and a broom along with yard waste bags (please remember to bring work gloves as well!) to work on the Hope Alive garden beds and playground plus other projects as assigned.
- Supporting Opening Day at the Frederick Little League. Under Debbi Matthews leadership we’ll have an all-star Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick crew on hand to be recognized for the Club support of two teams plus thanks the team parents and coaches and hand out membership brochures. Maybe we’ll get a photo with our teams!
- Hosting the Middle School Appreciation Dinner, planned for May 17. We’ve confirmed the Elks Club as the venue, have the plaques and blank certificate in hands, and will be contacting Middle Schools to let them know of our plans to hold this event and gain clarification on the best mid-May Tuesday. With luck Brenda will work on the program, with Debbi, Dave, and Aaron providing key input and guidance as we move forward.
- Peter will be presenting information to the club on the Anti-Bullying Initiative that is endorsed by Kiwanis that Ellis shared with the group recently. The goal is that the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick might be able to sponsor this effort in at least the schools in which we support Key Clubs and Builders Clubs. Stay tuned for news at the March business meeting!
