Jerry's
Words of Wisdom by
Pres. Jerry Jenkins
May
is here and all is fine.
Things
have slowed down a bit. We still have a bit of a problem manning
the hospital wheel chair van. Our thanks to Mike for pitching
in.
Our
Clergy appreciation night went quite well. Four clergy including
our keynote speaker were able to attend. We also had an interclub
from Mt. Airy show up. See the pics in an article below.
I
need a new Interclub chairman and some assistance with the
silent auction. If you have not heard, Phil’s wife has
been diagnosed with some serious health problems, and Phil
will be unable to commit the time to run these projects. Our
prayers and thoughts are with Cindy and you, Phil.
I
learned over the weekend that Frank Parker is a new Grandfather,
so congrats are in order.
Some
fun activities are coming up - from kids to horses. Please
be sure to attend next week's Middle School Appreciation Night
- it is a big event that needs your support. Christine has
done a great job organizing this always-enjoyable event. Bring
your spouse or significant other! You'll be glad you did.
I
will be gone to Oklahoma for most of the month of May, sos
Ken Dell will be able to try out the head table. Good luck,
Ken .
My
very Best to you all,
Jerry

Frederick County Safe Kids Coalition
Nancy
Boyd, RN, was a guest speaker at a recent club meeting.
Nancy reported on the activities of the Frederick County Safe
Kids Coalition and thanked the club for its past
support.
The mission of the Safe Kids Coalition is to prevent unintentional
injuries to children ages 14 and under through a coordinated
program of public awareness, education, legislative action,
enforcement, and access to low cost safety products. |
Paul
Sheets Meets KI Pres
While
snow-birding in FL recently, club member Paul Sheets had the
opportunity to meet KI President, Bob Moore, a member of the

Article Results in Gift of Horse
A recent article in the Capital District's Capital Builder
regarding Clyde Roney's granddaughter, Sarah, resulted in the
donation to her of an Appaloosa horse named "Diamond."
) Note the diamond-shaped patch on her head. (L to R - Donor
Deborah New (Past Lt. Gov. of Div 19 and member of the Clarke
Co. Kiwanis Club) stands next to NHFKelo Dark Star (registered
Appaloosa nicknamed "Diamond") with Sarah (a member
of 2003 International Special Olympics Equestrian Team) as NewHorizonScootnStar
("Diamond's" dam) looks on with great interest.)
Horse
to be Presented at Special Club Program
by Clyde Roney
The date of June 16th. has been confirmed for presentation
of the above mentioned Appaloosa filly, "Diamond",
to Sarah Roney at our Kiwanis meeting. Past Div. 19 Distinguished
Lt. Gov. (an donor) Deborah New will be here to make the transfer
and to be our speaker for the evening. Carolyn Roney, Sarah's
mother and my daughter, will make the "acceptance speech"
- short, but totally sincere and appreciative you can be sure.
Capital
District Gov. Linwood Watson will also attend as well as will
our Div. 9 Lt. Gov. Art Riley. I am asking that we make this
a spouses night as well as a sponsored interclub opportunity.
The Frederick News will be invited to bring a reporter/photographer
and the event will also be publicized in the Capital District's
eBuilder. This will be a totally different program, and one
which illustrates that Kiwanians are very caring, giving and
selfless. |
Middle
School Appreciation Night Always a Hit
by Christine Semon
May 12th, 2004 will mark the 14th annual Middle School Appreciation
Night that has been hosted by our club. With the assistance
from the teachers, counselors and principals of the 11 Middle
Schools in Frederick County, one "Most Improved Student"
is selected from each school. Criteria for the selection includes
some or all of the following: the demonstration of an improved
attitude, a desire to get along with others, and showing good
citizenship and attendance. No great emphasis is placed upon
Grade Point Averages; however, it has been noted that some students
in the past have raised their grades as a result of their efforts
towards better work ethics
and better attitude. Once the student is chosen by the schools,
invitation letters are sent to the families and principals of
the schools to invite them to our awards banquet. Our club pays
for the meals of the student, two family members and one school
representative, for each school. Often others from the family,
such as grandparents, aunts and uncles and even neighbors choose
to come to celebrate with the student! My favorite part of the
event is when the student gets to stand in front the room, in
front of our club, their family and peers, as their schools
representative (usually the principal or vice principal) tells
us all wonderful stories and reasons as to why they have been
chosen as the Most Improved Student of their school. You know
me and they way I cry at just about anything, well a tissue
box definitely needs to be close by for these awesome stories!
We (my assistant Helen Maloney and I) present the student with
a recognition plaque and gift for them to remember their honor
with. The schools look forward to this event each year, and
we usually receive several Thank You notes back from the schools
and students expressing their appreciation to our club for sponsoring
it. Hope to see you on the 12th (and if you don't need all your
tissues, be sure to pass the 'unused' ones my way!) |
