Mr. L. Edward Blumenauer




    Mr. L. Edward “Ed” Blumenauer, 76, lifelong resident of Frederick and well known local businessman, died Sunday, April 8, 2007, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

    Born in Frederick on May 26, 1930, he was a son of the late Charles S. and Pauline C. Shearer Blumenauer.

    Ed was a graduate of Frederick High School, class of 1947, and proudly served his country in the United States Army Signal Corps during the Korean War.

    Ed retired in 1995 after 46 years as secretary-treasurer of Frederick Produce Company, today known as Food Pro, and was also a director of Dan-Dee, Inc. He was a past president of the Frederick Jaycees and received the JCI Senator award in 1967. He was also a member and past director of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick, with perfect attendance for 30 years, and was awarded the George F. Hixon Award in 2001. His other activities included former Frederick County Easter Seal chairman, secretary for the Western Maryland Council for Crippled Children and Adults and service on the council of Goodwill Industries. He was a former trustee for The Community Foundation of Frederick County, director of the Terrapin Club of the University of Maryland, secretary of the Francis Scott Key Investment Club and a member of the YMCA Heritage Club.

    Ed was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church; Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11; Frederick Elks Lodge 684; Amvets Post 2; Frederick County Fish and Game Protective Association; and a life member of the Independent Hose Company, No. 1.

    He was an avid sports fan who loved the Washington Redskins, Baltimore Orioles and Ravens and the Maryland Terp’s, and he enjoyed fishing.

    Surviving is his sister, Betty B. Page of Frederick; sister-inlaw, Betty Long Blumenauer of Frederick; nephew, Kenneth J. Page of Frederick; great-niece and great-nephew, Stephanie A. and Joseph W. Page, both of Frederick; and cousins, Lora Grams, Martha Jean Foreman and Richard Kennedy.

    Ed will be remembered by a host of friends.

    He was preceded in death by a brother, C. Robert Blumenauer, who died June 19, 1982.

    Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

    Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 12, from the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 East Church St., Frederick. The Rev. Dr. David G. Oravec, pastor of the church, will officiate.

    Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
