Phil's Podium by Pres. Phil Pople

In years past, this time of year would be considered the Start of the dog days of summer. Not this year! Get your seat belts on because we are about to take off! Actually it started back on April 5th with our first in what I hope becomes an annual car wash. Thanks to Tracy for providing the location in order to pull this off. We raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $350 to help our Walkersville Key club. Many thanks to Dave, Christine, Traci, and Debbie for all their hard work in pulling that off.

In another in what I hope is an annual event, is the June 7th pig roast. It will be located at the Amvets in Middletown at 3 PM. Many thanks to Ellis for paying for the pig and shelter. Also big thanks to Charlie for buying the beer. Bill Muffi asks each of you to bring 3 or 4 guests. Cost is $10 per person.

Hope everybody recovers from that event quickly because the next weekend is the Keys game we are hosting. Since our club shelled out $1250 for this event I would hope that everybody cleared their calendar to be able to attend this event. The purpose of this is to help build membership, which has become critical for our clubs survival. Please plan to attend and show the Kiwanis colors.

Don't forget to bring your bags of aluminum cans to each board meeting. Terry will take them to the recycling center to raise funds for our admin account.

Jim Wiggins reminds us that the Mt Airy Club will be having their Charter Night on Wed May 7, 2008 (Wednesday) at 6:30P at the My Airy Senior Center. If you would like to attend let Jim ASAP by
e-mail at jswiggins@earthlink.net. Mt Airy need to know no later than May 2, 2008.

And last is our silent/live auction scheduled for September 13th at the Holiday Inn. Bill has done an admirable job in helping gear up for that. Please see him for any advise/donations.

So lets keep the above dates open. And remember that membership growth is job number one with our club. Please if you know of anyone who would be interested in joining don't be afraid to ask. Bring him/her to a meeting and we will throw out the red carpet. Lets have a safe and fun month.

Oh, by the day, Dave Maloney apologizes for misplacing last month's board meeting minutes sent to him well in advance of this issue of the eChatter by our faithful Sec. Terry. Since this is the very first time Dave has ever made a mistake with the award-winning eChatter, we should all cut him some slack and not dump on him to much at tonight's meeting. <g> Also, don't make him feel bad by asking why the eChatter was so late this month <VBG>.

Suburban Frederick and Westminster Clubs to Hold Recruitment Drive at Keys Baseball Game June 14th
by Frank Parker

The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick together with the Westminster Kiwanis Club is hosting a special KIWANIS evening at the Frederick Keys minor league baseball game being played at Harry Grove stadium (right) in Frederick, MD on June 14, 2008. The evening is an integral part of the club's plan for the recruitment of new members in 2008.

The event will feature a large KIWANIS banner that all attending must pass and will see as they enter the park. There will be a table with a similar banner above it just as people turn to toward the third base side of the stadium. The table will be the place where club members can hand out KIWANIS literature, sell raffle tickets and/or invite people to visit our clubs.

The game will begin with Capital District Governor Art Riley throwing out the first pitch and giving a short statement to the crowd about Kiwanis. Two viewings of Kiwanis photos will take place on the large screen over left center field and two 20-second Kiwanis Public Service Announcements will be broadcast during the game.

The Keys' publicity staff will include this special Kiwanis Night in their media promotions on the web, in mass emails and on internet radio. The evening will conclude with fireworks at the end of the game and hopefully some new members in both clubs. The evening is expected to draw 4,000 to 5,000 fans.

2nd Key-Leader Weekend a Success!
by Helen Maloney

April 25-27, 2008 was my second time at Key-Leader. The first was as a new participant last October. This time I returned as a facilitator and enjoyed working alongside the adults to make the weekend at Arlington Echo Education Center in Millersville, MD special for the first-timers. Every high schooler student should be able to experience Key-Leader. We are able to work with and understand different personality types - something that will be important to us as we enter the adult world and workplace. The information we learned that weekend is even being taught to 50 year-old business owners, so, in reality, Key-Leader participants are getting about a 30 year head start in that area! Our leader, Chris, brought his own style of explaining important concepts from the adult's point of view. Mrs. Lee, Mr. Dudey, Mrs. Holley and the other Kiwanis adult organizers and helpers were good role models for us and were easy to get along with. We were at ease with them and felt comfortable opening up to them. The Arlington Echo facilities were clean and comfortable and even the food was good! I'd strongly recommend that all Kiwanis clubs sponsor at least one motivated high schooler to each and every Capital District Key-Leader Program.

The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick is chartering organization for Cub Scout Pack 285 which meets monthly at Tuscarora Middle School. Recently the club contributed $300 to Pack 285 to advance their Scouting program. In recognition of their support, the Pack presented the Kiwanis club with a plaque of appreciation. Shown left to right Pack Cubmaster Karl Noah presents the plaque to club President-elect Dave Maloney.

Debra Spurrier representing the pork industry recently spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick. She shared information about how the industry is impacting the local economy. Her extremely interesting presentation included what is going on in the food and pork business in Frederick county, trends in the local farm economy, and advances in pork production and what those advances mean to the food we buy. Pictured here from left to right Debra Spurrier shares a pork industry brochure with club members Joe Vitanza and Bill Muffi.

Former Frederick City Alderman Bill Hall recently entertained members of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick with stories of his childhood, military service, local employment and service to Frederick as a city alderman. Afterwards Hall was presented with a miniature Kiwanian bell - a token of the club's appreciation for his visit. Show left to right club member Mick Hickman, Bill Hall, club member Bud Jackson.

The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick is the sponsoring organization for Cub Pack 285 which meets monthly at Tuscarora Middle School with Karl Noah as Cubmaster. Recently, several members of the Kiwanis Club attended the Pack's annual Blue & Gold Banquet at which Cub Scouts are presented awards including the highest and most prestigious award in Cub Scouting - the Arrow of Light. The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick recently learned about the mission of the Frederick County Veterans Association from FCVA member Dan Wagner. Wagner explained that the focus of the FCVA is on the unique needs of the Reserve and Guard components of our Armed services and their families who have previously or are now serving in the Iraq and Afghan conflicts. Wagner also explained his involvement with Frederick County Right to Life and its ties with Mission of Mercy. Linda Ryan, Mission of Mercy Ex. Dir., also addressed the club and described her organization's program for offering free health care for the underinsured via the Mission's mobile units and volunteer doctors and nurses. The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick has supported Mission of Mercy in the past through its Young Children Priority One program which assists needy children from prenatal development through age five. The Burns family of Thurmont was the grand-prize winner of a recent raffle held by the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick to benefit local needy and disadvantaged children. Shipley's TV Sales & Service helped sponsor the event. "We are pleased to have had strong community support in such an important endeavor as this," said the club's raffle co-chairman, Joe Vitanza. Pictured are the winners picking up their grand-prize flat screen TV. From left to right are Margaret Burns and her daughter, Rachel, Marshall Carpenter of Shipley's, and Kiwanian Joe Vitanza. The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick recently joined forces with Key Club members from Tuscarora and Walkersville High Schools for a carwash fund raiser to help defray expenses for students attending the upcoming annual Key Club Convention in Richmond, VA. The carwash was sponsored by First United Bank & Trust and was held at their Monocacy Blvd. branch. "We are pleased to offer our support to local Kiwanis High School Key Clubs," said branch VP Tracy Bemiller. "These youth clubs focus on learning leadership skills and providing outstanding community service - something that My Bank/First United Bank & Trust encourages," he continued. Pictured are Kiwanians and Key Club members hard at work. The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick is currently seeking additional Frederick area leaders interested in community service.
