Last week LTG Donna Ohler held a Division 9 Council Meeting hosted by the Frederick Club at Homewood at Crumland Farms. Representatives from six of the eight Division 9 clubs were present. Ellis, Mick, Christine and myself represented Suburban Frederick. Clubs gave reports on their activities. A motion was made and approved to pay $600 from the Div. 9 account to LTG Ohler to help defray the expenses associated with attending the upcoming Kiwanis International Convention in Nashville next month. In addition, an attempt was made to hold an election for Div. 9 LTG-elect to serve from 2010 to 2011 as well as for a Div. 9 LTG to serve next year, 2009-2010. Unfortunately, there were no nominations for either position, so both positions remain unfilled.
STOP THE PRESSES: Ellis just informed me that Fred Lohnes has stepped up to fill the Div. 9 LTG position for 2009-2010. But the Division still needs a LTG-Elect to serve 2010-2011.
Christine did a great job coordinating last week's annual Sponsored Leadership Program Appreciation Night. Students, family and school advisors from the Middletown MS Builders Club, Tuscarora HS Key Club, and Walkersville HS Key Club were present. Each club reviewed their accomplishments from last year and their goals for next year. Div. 9 Key Club LTG Marvin Gee, a Tuscarora HS senior, was present and reviewed the highlights of his administrative year.
On April 4th, I joined Mick and Christine in Middletown to help with the carwash which netted over $500 for the Middletown MS Builder's Club. It was a windy but sunny day - the first nice day in quite a while so there were lots of dirty cars needing washing. The kids were excited and had a blast getting soaked as everyone (including customers) found themselves targeted by the wind-swept spray. The same day, Debbi and I met at the Baker Park ball field to help with the Frederick Area Little League annual ball field clean-up work day. We also took the opportunity to present the Little League with a support check in the amount of $700.
And what a beautiful day it was on April 18th as myself, Bill, Phil, Frank, Terry and Eric headed for Sabillasville and a morning of yard work at Hope Alive Miniseries. A special thanks to Eric for arranging a trailer to haul the tractor we donated to Hope Alive. As you recall, former member Tracy Bemiller had donated the tractor to our club. After a little fix up and scrub down, it looked like new. Hope Alive was thrilled to have it donated to them! While there, Phil tilled the garden; Eric, Terry and Phil turned the mulch in the playground, Bill cleaned out and reorganized the shed, and Frank and I reorganized logs, fence posts and bulk trash items.
Thanks for Ed for again manning the SAFE kids during the Kids Day in the Park event held annual by the City of Frederick in Baker Park. Ed handed out car seat stickers and outlet plugs as he talked to parents about Kiwanis.
All-in-all, it was a busy month for our Club. Check out the above calendar for more activities in which we can participate - a Tiger Cub Fun Night on May 8th, Mt. Airy Charter Night on May 20th, and our own annual Middle School Appreciation Night on May 21st (this is a special club event that we all need to attend). |
Suburban Frederick Club K Family Night by Dave Maloney

The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick recently held its annual K Family Night to recognize the efforts of the Service Leadership Programs the club sponsors. Organized by club SLP Chairperson, Christine Semon, this year's program featured members from the Walkersville Key Club, Tuscarora Key Club, and the Middletown Builders Club. Joining the event were club advisors, family and friends. Each club reviewed achievements from the past year and its goals for the next year. Division 9 Key Club LTG Marvin Gee was also present and offered his assessment of his administrative year. Marvin noted that Key Club had a significant positive impact on his term in high school. Pictured below are SLP members along with their club advisors. On the far left is SLP Chair, Christine Semon. On the far right is club president, Dave Maloney.

Suburban Frederick Club Donate's Tractor on Behalf of Member by Dave Maloney
The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick recently donated a much needed yard tractor to Hope Alive, a facility for homeless women and children in Sabillasville. The tractor was donated to the club by a member, Tracy Bemiller. After delivering the tractor, members of the club helped with chores, including turning the playground mulch, organizing the storage shed, stacking lumber and trash removal. Pictured, from left, are Bill Muffi, Eric Gatrell, Phil Pople, Terry Proescholdt, Dave Maloney, Frank Parker, club members; and seated on tractor, Sue Oehmig, executive director of Hope Alive.
