Mick's Corner by Pres. Mick Hickman
Are you happy April is over? We certainly had a busy month. The rains all during the month certainly challenged our projects and patience, but we managed. Only the baseball game got rained out 2 weeks in a row. I hope we can in the coming month or so see our team play. I'm proud to be a member of the club with the biggest heart.
The work party at Hope Alive early in the month was a success. This past Saturday I had to pass by Baker Park and it was jammed with people for Safe Kids Day at which Ed Crawford coordinate our booth. I hope to hear from the members of how successful our booth was in handing out the materials they had to keep kids a little safer. And I'll also report to you on the Division 9 Council Meeting we went to last Wednesday. I guess our only disappointment was we didn't get to the Little League game. Maybe we can find a game sometime during May.
We've got a biggie for May 17th. Student Appreciation Night. For you seasoned members, you know and can appreciate the importance of the evening. For the newer members, please make it a point to be there. You will hear stories and be able to meet students who have done a positive and complete turn-around in their academic life, and some of the stories are truly amazing. Please, please, please, I would like at least one Kiwanian at every table with the student and his/her family. I do not want to see a little cluster of Kiwanians sitting together in a corner. I know some may be a bit uncomfortable for one reason or another, but please "man up". We will have an opportunity to make a good impression on the kids (potential Key Club members) if their school has or may have a club next school year. But more importantly, we will have a chance to speak with the parents and invite one or both to be a part of our club. It's a golden opportunity.
We've got Board meeting this week and from the looks of the pile of paper I've got, we've got quite of an agenda to work through. Please try to attend. Maybe it won't be as lengthy as I'm imagining. See you Tuesday night.

Big To-Do at May 17th Meeting - Middle School Most-Improved Student Night!
by Peter Brehm
The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick is holding its annual Middle School Appreciation Banquet on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at the Elk’s Lodge, 289 Willowdale Drive, Frederick, Maryland 21702. This year’s event continues our tradition of recognizing deserving students from each of the Frederick County Middle Schools. We ask that everyone arrive to the Elk’s Lodge between 6:00 pm - 6:15 pm. Dinner will be served beginning at 6:30 pm.
With thanks to co-planners Debbi Mathews, Brenda Edwards, Dave Maloney, Dave Schmitt, and Aaron Valentino, as of now:
- All fourteen Middle Schools have selected a own Most Improved Student. As in previous years, each school used its own criteria in the selection of its Most Improved Student.
- We’ve sent invitation letters to the students and their families explaining details about the event. Each student, two family members, and the school representative who will introduce the student and share the student’s accomplishments with banquet attendees will be guests of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick. Additional guests are welcome, and we’ve asked that they pay a $15/person dinner cost. Families will let us know of any additional guests when they respond to our invitation. As of today we have 56 students, parents, and teachers planning to attend.
- Brenda has completed the program design and is awaiting some final school representative names.
- Dave Maloney has the plaques and together with Peter will produce these this coming weekend.
- Brenda had a terrific idea to purchase 14 inexpensive plants for each table that will be given to the students at the close of the dinner.
- Continuing the tradition, Debbi will be getting each student a $25 gift certificate from Barnes and Noble that will be given to the students.
- Dave Maloney has agreed to take photographs at the dinner.
- Dave Schmitt has agreed to be the Happy Bucks Emcee.
- Debbi will be assisting at the registration table.
What’s left? Here is where we need help from Club members:
- Please plan on attending the dinner, and if you wish, please bring your spouse. Please let Peter know your plans to attend since he needs to give a dinner count to the Elks Lodge. Because of the nature of the event, it is suggested we dress business casual (slacks, leather shoes, and a shirt with a collar).
- While we each have different comfort levels with meeting new people, we need to remember this is a “working” dinner. This means we need to spread Club members around and not have Club members cluster at one table. By having a Kiwanian at every table it's an opportunity to be sociable with the student and his/her family and put in a word or two about one or both parents and / or the school representative to possibly join.

Above: 2010 recipients.

Children's Day the Park
by Ed Crawford
Children's Day at the park was held Saturday April 30 at Baker Park from 10am until 3pm. Kiwanians signed up to help pass out car seat stickers and outlet covers included Ed Crawford, Pat long, Jim Wiggins, Frank Parker. Pete Brehm and Aaron Valentino. That's all I have on my sign up list. The participation in this activity was part of our commitment to Safe Kids and comes under the auspices of our club's Young Children Priority One Committee. |

Frederick Municipal Airport

Frederick Municipal Airport Manager, Kevin Daugherty, AAE, recently updated the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick on the status of major improvements being made to the Frederick airport facility. Included are the construction of an airport control tower, and a runway extension in order to accommodate the needs of larger aircraft. Accompanying Daugherty was Josh Russin, Executive Assistant to Frederick Mayor, Randy McClement. Pictured (L to R), club member Bill Muffi presents Daugherty with a child's book as Russin looks on. The book, part of the club's Read Around the World program, is to be donated to the C. Burr Artz Public Library in the name of the Daugherty and the Frederick Municipal Airport.

Hope Alive Work Detail a Success!

The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick recently provided assistance to Hope Alive in Sabillasville, MD. Hope Alive is a non-profit Christian ministry that offers transitional home and support services for women and their children. The Kiwanians spent the day weeding, landscaping, cleaning the flower beds, tilling the playground mulch, and removing and repairing fencing. "We cannot fully express our thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick. They were so pleasant, happy and willing to work," said Missy Miller, Operations Manager. Pictured (l to r) standing are Bob Rankin, Joe Vitanza, Frank Parker, Dave Maloney and David Schmitt. Sitting are Patrick Long, Missy Miller and Peter Brehm.
