Ken's Korner by Pres. Ken Dell

WOW! Being President is proving to be quite interesting and challenging. My first month started off with two business trips out of town and so much work and personal stuff going on that my respect for those of you who have done this before me has gone up several more notches. This job would be impossible were it not for the dedicated Officers and Directors of our club. I would ask that everyone please thank and support these people as they go about the business of running our club and making our presence known and felt in our community. If you have an idea about fundraising, a project we could or should do, a group that needs help/support or whatever, please bring it to the attention of our leadership. We need your input and support to be a successful organization. And please let me know if I’m not doing something correctly; remember I have never done this before.

I need to emphasize again that you not only ask people to consider becoming a new member, but that you get them here, pick them up and drive them if you have to. Where else are they going to go for a couple of hours to get a good meal FREE and be entertained by such good speakers who can update them with current information as to what is going on not only in our community but also in our great country or around the world. Eric needs your help as we try to take our club back to the level it was a year ago so we can continue to serve our community and its children as needed.

Last month I asked you to offer some opinions/advice/suggestions about the direction of our club as if you were replying to a survey. Please be sure to get me your input. We really need your input in order to keep it fun and you happy. Remember, this is YOUR club. Please enjoy the day!

Dwayne Robbins spoke to our club about the "Necktie Club" at Frederick High School. The club is designed to improve the life and business skills of African American youth. Right, Dwayne, center, poses with club VP Patrick Haley, left, and club Pres Ken Dell, right.

Ed Goley, Economic Development in Frederick County, updated our club on recent developments that impact on the growth of Frederick County. Right, Club VP Patrick Haley, left, thanks Ed goley, center, as club Pres. Ken Dell looks on.

Dan Kurtenbach, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Monocacy Valley joined Rocky Mackintosh, Chairman of Goodwill's Board of Directors, described Goodwill's goal to improve the lives of the disadvantaged and handicapped of Frederick County by providing job skills and workplace opportunities to Americans with disabilities. Right, club Pres. Ken Dell, right, greats Rocky Mackintosh, left, and Dan Kurtenbach, center.

Fruit Sales by Phil Pople

I know I've been harping on everyone to sell fruit. I know it gets old and your sick and tired of hearing it. I know if I was in your shoes, I would be tired of it too.

I've got to harp on it though because I'm getting the sense that not everyone is putting in a 110% like I asked. Our hours at the gift wrap are going to be way down this year. Although I can't tell you how much money we will lose by not working a normal schedule as in past years, I can tell you its going to take an extra push from our other fund raisers to make up the difference. That of course means selling more fruit, and selling more tickets for the shrimp feed.

I'm sure I will get an argument when I say its a whole lot easier to sell fruit than to wrap gifts, but if you consider the amount of hours standing behind a table wrapping Lord only knows how many gifts, then fighting the traffic in and out of that mall for 30 days, you might agree with me.

Selling fruit can be easy. I've found 3 different people to help me sell the stuff. My, wife at her work at Fort Detrick, the receptionist in my building, and the bank manager at the bank where my company makes their deposits. All it takes is a little effort. Its time to roll up those sleeves, sweat a little bit and make yourself and our club proud.
