Christine's Connections by Pres. Christine Semon

As we move into the "Season of Giving" I wanted to share some information with the club this month. At the beginning of this new year, Kiwanis International 'kicked off' a new public service and ad campaign. It focuses on what all of us at the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick already know - that "One Can Make a Difference". The ads were designed to create a stronger awareness of the world of Kiwanis clubs and of our new defining statement ("Kiwanis is an International organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child one community at a time.") The ads will creatively demonstrate the future potential of children around the world. As our club already knows through the contributing to our youth and community in Frederick county, the campaign emphasizes the influence that Kiwanis has on young lives. It focuses on four areas: shelter, food, literacy and music. In each scenario, children are shown participating in everyday acts, and a prediction is made of what their dreams for their future might be. It implies that one person can make a difference in their lives. Kiwanis clubs world wide are empowering children, and those children are then helping change the world we live in! Pretty profound. They are all pretty inspiring images, so please check out the new material when you have time!

This leads me to the next bit information I wanted to remind you of. November is Kiwanis Family Month!! I have two updates. First of all, Circle K is hosting a Family K day in Northern VA on Saturday, November 5th, as mentioned by LTG Beth Appleton at our installation night. It should be pretty close for us in Frederick County. I am working on getting specifics, so please hold some space in your calendar on the 5th and I will let you know by the board meeting on Nov 3rd what I find out. Hopefully our Key clubs and Circle K can participate as well! This would assist with one of my goals this year which is to increase our participation with our sponsored youth.

Secondly, as you already know, our club sponsors one Builders Club, two Key Clubs and one Circle K Club. You might not know it but we are looking at the possibility of taking on another Key club. Why you ask? Well, please allow me to give you the scoop: The original advisor for Middletown Key Club (Mr. Mosser) has approached us to sponsor a service club for which he is advisor at Tuscarora High. Apparently, it had been sponsored by the Rotary (as an Interact (?) club); however, for some reason, they are no longer able to sponsor the club. They need a new sponsor. Since Mr. Mosser's had a positive experience with Kiwanis in the past (and since he is a past Circle K'er himself), he thought of contacting us with his dilemma. The club has been in existence since 2003 and currently has about 30-40 student members. I am working with Mark Gaver and Jim Krysiek on this project. I will let the club know of any details and updates I have very soon.

A few other reminders: Phil asks that we continue to sell Fruit (monies are due at the Nov. 17th club meeting). Dave and Phil ask that we sign up for gift-wrap (it will be here before you know it)! Phil and I ask that you continue to work on scheduling your speakers to visit our club. This will help make our meetings informative and more interesting.

The Kiwanis family is made up of over 600,000 adults and youth volunteers across the world. We are very proud of the four clubs we currently sponsor, and maybe a fifth in the near future. They all promote the ideals of voluntary service as a means to improve the lives and give something back to our communities and world.

As William Wordsworth once said: "The best portion of a good mans life are his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love" (This applies for woman also!) I am looking forward to a great and fun month with Kiwanis!! Keep the season of giving going! Remember: One CAN make a difference and I am very proud that our club consistently does!!

Sell Sell Sell by Phil Pople

I hope by now your fruit sales are in full swing. Remember, I need your sheets and money no earlier or later than the 17th November meeting. Give your money to Leslie. Give me your sheets. Tell your customers their fruit ought to be in the first week in December. Remember, our little insentive program we have going on the year for those with $500 or more in sales. Lets make this a fruituctive year! Thanks Phil/Your friendly Fund Raising Chair.

TAG Team Continues to Build Steam by John Montgomery

The Capital District TAG Team continues to build steam as it completes its first month of a three-year effort to improve Kiwanis membership numbers in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Washington, D.C.

Thus far, the team has visited six clubs that have requested assistance and has three more club visits scheduled prior to the holidays – Upper Chesapeake, Charles County and Elkridge. Of the six clubs that the TAG team has worked with to date, five continue to operate and the sixth, Mid-Chesapeake, merged with Calvert County in August. (Pictured is a Div. 9 TAG team training session conducted by Tom Ganse. Clockwise from lower left corner: Jerry Jenkins, Eric Gatrell, Christine Semon, Bill Butts, Tom Ganse, Phil Pople, Susan, Grantham. Not in the picture are Div. 9 LTG Jim Jacobs and photographer Dave Maloney.)

In addition, the team has conducted training sessions at the district convention, the Southwest Virginia Regional Conference, and the Division 18/24 division council meeting. Another training session is planned for the Division 3 Leadership conference in Wytheville on Nov. 6.

Every member of the team has received extensive KI training designed to build new clubs, assist existing clubs, and rebuild smaller clubs. The team has completed a three-year membership growth plan and has divided the district club membership list for trend analysis. Particular attention is being given to clubs that have dropped to less than 15 members. The team’s work is beginning to spread into club support committees via regional representatives.

The 10-member TAG team is led by chairman Tom Ganse, a PLG. The other nine members of the team have extensive Kiwanis leadership experience and several have served as district governors.

The team hopes to prepare new-member orientation templates and interactive-training DVDs. It will seek funding at the Nov. 9 Capital District board meeting to underwrite these objectives.
