Christine's Connections by Pres. Christine Semon

Happy belated Halloween to everyone! I hope you all had an enchanting day watching the children, young adults and adults (in some cases) travel through your neighborhoods-enjoying the activity of pretend and dressing up for the day!

We had a very busy and exciting first month of our New Year! At the board meeting one of the goals we accomplished was to approve our Annual Budget for the year. Thanks again to all who contributed and helped develop it, including Leslie, Ellis, Phil and Dave. It should be a great tool for us through the year to help with our contributions back to our sponsored youth and our community. This year I hope we can continue to utilize our connections with the Frederick County Community Foundation to get additional press coverage and articles in the local paper. As we know, this is a great tool, other than our own word of mouth, to let others in the community know the great things we are doing in the area! I would also like to thank again the committee chairs from last year for all their hard work and dedication. I’d want to thank the chairspeople for the upcoming year. Thanks for you willingness to step up to the fun and challenge. It should be a great year! At the board meeting, we were surprised and pleased to be joined by Capital District Governor, Bob Cressy, (right) who was in town to discuss Capital Builder issues with editor and club member, Dave Maloney. I look forward to having a great year with Gov. Bob.

Our first speaker of the month was our member (and award winning editor) Dave Maloney’s wife, Barbara Maloney. She shared with us the FISH Philosophy. The presentation was very informative and entertaining. If you missed it, shame on you! I will summarize some of the main points that were offered to help people enjoy their job or projects: 1) Play! 2) Make their day 3) Be there (be present) and 4) Choose your attitude. Thanks again to Barb for sharing her wisdom! Also, good luck with you goal of subconsciously sharing the philosophy with your new co-workers.

The next week was very busy for us. We were honored by a visit from new LTG Fred Lohnes to help us induct 3 new members into our club! Welcome again our newest members Terry, Debbi and Dan!! We are all looking forward to getting to know you better in the near future! Thank you Eric and Phil and the club members participating in the ceremony by reading the Kiwanis objectives. I have always liked our special ceremony and the way several members of the club can participate with the presentation! It just makes it extra special!! After the induction we had Tom Moran and David Goodno from our local local Frederick Maaco Auto Collision Repair & Auto Painting share with us about their company and the services they offer. They had a nice and informative presentation complete with slides.

The last week of the month we here honored again by an official visit from LTG Fred Lohnes, as well as many others, to our club meeting. Our club hosted the first Division 9 Divisional Counsel Meeting (DCM). It was great to see 7 out of the 9 clubs attend from our Division! We were honored to have several special dignitaries (other than the club members) including Governor Elect Art Riley, Regional Trustee Don Dudey, Division 9 Secretary/Treasurer Stephanie Dalquist, Key Club Division 9 LTG Ellen Huyen and Immediate Past LTG Jim Jacobs. We also had several guests to the meeting, including one that Charlie Mertz invited back, one that a member from Taneytown invited and our own (very missed) Clyde Roney and his wife, Wynne, visiting from his new home in Florida. Clyde was in town to celebrate his 80th birthday with his Maryland family and friends. As a group, we had a nice impromptu rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ to Clyde and our own Phil Pople, who also celebrated his birthday recently. LTG Fred ran an efficient and informative DCM and a good time was had by all.

Please remember to continue to invite speakers/presenters for our weekly meetings and let our Vice President Dave Maloney know, so he can plan the schedule each month. He has a chosen to take it all on this year, instead of breaking it up to pairs of club members as we did last year. So let's support him with this endeavor, as the great club and team we are. I recall being in charge of this duty a few years ago, when I was VP. Although it was very rewarding, it was occasionally a bit stressful and challenging to be in charge of all programs for the year (except for the 1st week of the month when we have our Board meeting!) Check out the 2006-2007 speaker program schedule. Thanks in advance for your support with this! Also please remember to check out and sign up for our gift-wrap project soon. It will be here before you know it!

As we are quickly entering the holiday season I am inspired by a few quotes. As said by an unknown author about Courage: “Heroes are ordinary people who place their dreams above their fears.” And a quote by one of my personal heroes, Mother Teresa, “I can do no great things. Only small things with great love.” As members of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick, we will be talking to many the next few months! Whether it is to ask how many oranges or grapefruit they would like to order for our fruit fundraiser, what holiday paper they would like to have their special gift wrapped in or if they would like to visit us at one of our weekly meetings as a guest. It will definitely be busy however it should be a fun time!! According to Grandma Moses “Life is what we make of it. Always has been. Always will be.” Go forth Suburban Frederick, continue to do what you do best, as my heroes and please enjoy, love and remember to have fun in your life!!!

Speaker Programs A Hit

Dave Maloney's wife, Barb Maloney, Branch V.P. of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, shared the Fish! Philosphy with club members at a recent meeting. Following a brief movie explaining the business philosphy as employed by the Pike Place Fish Market of Seattle, WA, Barb excplained how the philosphy can be incorporated not only into a business but into a not-for-profit service organization such as Kiwanis as well. "Playing, Making The Customer's Day, Being There for the Customer, and Choosing Your Attitude make our efforts more successful and more fun," Barbara said. (Shown right Barb Maloney is thanked by husband, club member and program chair, Dave.)

Maaco Collision Repair & Auto Painting President Tom Moran, ably assisted by David Goodno (a tank gunner and two-tour Iraq War veteran), explained the operations of an auto body shop including the need for well-trained body men, tapers and spray painters. Tom explained that because of systems already in place, Maaco will do well when new EPA regulations regarding chemical emissions take effect in the near future. Shown right, Club Pres. Christine Semon thanks Tom Moran and David Goodno.

Club Inducts Three New Members

It was Hat Trick for the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick as three new members were recently inducted. Membership Chairman Eric Gatrell briefly reviewed the club history and noted the important impact each and every member makes on that history which is one of hard work and generosity towards helping the less fortunate of Frederick County. Each member recevied a new-member packet of information, a Kiwanis pin and, a new Kiwanis hat - prompting some members to ask if they could quit and then rejoin just to get such a nice hat! The answer was No!

Eric Gatrell gives brief history of club and leaders members who read the six precepts of Kiwanis International. Div. 9 Lt. Gov. Fred Lohnes looks on.
Phil Pople lights one candle at a time as the six precepts of Kiwanis are read by club members. Members-to-be Debbi Matthews, Dan Sheehan and Terry Proescholdt look on.

Fruit Sale Underway by Phil Pople

Our annual fruit sale is in full swing for another year. There was some confusion as to our pricing sheet. I want to make sure everyone is on the same page as far as pricing is concerned so I have included an image and price for each product below. Note that each comes in a Mini size (new this year), a Small size and in a Large size.

For tips on making your fruit sales efforts more successful, go here.

Please remember I need your money no later than Nov. 16th. I will place the order the next day. Delivery will be sometime between Nov 28th through Dec 1st. We do not know the exact day or time, so please standby your phones for a list minute phone call so you can show and help unloadd. They can give us only a two-hour advance warning. So please be standing by. We need you help unloading. We will unload at 1209 East St.
