| Ken's
Korner by
Pres. Ken Dell
It’s
7 pm Friday evening, and I'm sitting here at the office trying
to gather all the many thoughts I’ve had about now being
your President for the new Kiwanis year. First, I thank you
for the chance to serve. This is a great opportunity, and
I will try to give it as much time as I can. I am trying to
cut down on the 70+ hours a week here at the office so I can
devote more time to you in order that we can move forward
together. There are so many opportunities for us as individuals
and as a group to serve our community and each other. Please
take a moment to think of how you would like to impact the
community, whatever it may be. Do you want to help more children
or adults or care-giving organizations or basic service facilities
or what? What would you personally do if the opportunity was
available — give of your time & talents, or give
money? Do you desire to see some self-help or self-improvement
projects that are ongoing in our club? Our club is in a time
of transition and your input is important and needed so our
club can use its resources, both people and money, in a way
to provide the most impact to our community and keep our member
both actively involved and happy.
We
also need to grow our club membership. We may possibly lose
more “regular” members to moving or illness this
year. Your help is needed; talk to your neighbors, golf partners,
daughters/sons, daughters/sons-in-law, fellow church members,
former members, as well as other volunteers at various events
you may assist at, etc.
I
thought about making a survey form for you to complete but
the survey is only as good as the questions. I believe that
you as fellow humans, alive and able to think for yourselves,
can do just as good a job. Therefore, I’m asking each
of you to think about the questions asked above and take a
few minutes to put down your thoughts and ideas/suggestions.
And please don’t just think about how or what was done
in the past but how we can address the future in this constantly
evolving world and do not be afraid to offer new ideas or
ways. We need to keep Kiwanis not only fun but relevant to
our community. Your help and input is needed and appreciated.
You may do so anonymously if you choose, but please remember
to suggest things/ideas that you personally would be a part
of.
Till
next time,
Ken.
P.S:
I wanted you to be aware that my email is at the office, so
I only get your messages during the workday. Feel free to
call me at home or work whenever necessary. |
Mark
Gaver & GTI Federal Honor Russ Turney
Right:
On behalf of The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Fund,
Carmi Sayler, left, accepts a $5,000 check from Mark Gaver,
President of GTI Federal, in memory of Kiwanian Russell D.
Turney, Sr.
Frederick,
Maryland; September 30, 2004: Mark Gaver, President of GTI
Federal and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick,
contributed $5,000 to The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick
Fund, one of over 450 funds held by The Community Foundation
of Frederick County. Mr. Gaver made the gift in memory of
Russell D. Turney, Sr., who passed away on September 12, 2004
at the age of 57. Mr. Turney was a member of the Kiwanis Club
of Suburban Frederick, serving as past president and current
District Lt. Governor Elect, and a 25 year employee of the
Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office, serving
as Chief Investigator.
"Russ
Turney was a giving person who was always there to help those
in need. This gift honors his spirit of humanity by establishing
funds that will assist those in the Frederick community in
the name of Russell D. Turney, Sr.," shares Mr. Gaver.
In accordance with the Turney family’s wishes, Mr. Gaver
asked that the contribution be used to benefit those in Frederick
County seeking an education in the field of criminal justice.
The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick turned to the Community
Foundation to establish The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick
Fund as a donor-advised fund. This allows The Kiwanis Club
of Suburban Frederick to recommend where the fund’s
charitable disbursements might be directed in carrying out
the service club’s charitable activities, particularly
those relating to children and senior citizens in Frederick
County. The flexibility of its donor-advised fund allows the
Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick to stipulate that Mr. Gaver’s
gift be used toward scholarships for Frederick County students
studying criminal justice as a way to honor Mr. Turney’s
memory.
Other
service clubs interested in starting their own funds with
the Community Foundation may call 301.695.7660 or visit www.cffredco.org
for more information. Since 1986, the Community Foundation
has been working with individuals, families, businesses, and
civic associations to establish charitable funds that enhance
the local quality of life by awarding grants and scholarships.
Additional
contributions to The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Fund
are accepted in any amount at any time. Checks may be made
payable to and mailed to The Community Foundation of Frederick
County, 312 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. Insert
“Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick” in the check’s
memo line. To make a gift using Visa or MasterCard, call 301.695.7660.
Gifts are tax deductible to the furthest extent of the law. |
