Dave's Corner by Pres. Dave Maloney

Well, that Phil Pople will sure be a tough act to follow! Thanks, Phil, for a successfull, laugh-filled year. One of the highlights of Phil's year was the recently completed 2008 Silent/Live Auction Fundraiser. Click here for a photo album of auction setup activities. We are pleased to have netted over $1600 for this event.

Thanks, too, to the outgoing officers, board members and chairs. And to the new leaders, welcome! We appreciate your commitment to the club and to service to your community. In the left column is your club's new "organizational chart".

We had a great installation of club officers at last Thursday's meeting. Div. 9 LTG Donna Ohler conducted the ceremony. She was accompanied to Frederick by a couple other members from her Westminster club. And with nearly all our active members present, it was a full house!

As we begin this new year, I'll keep a calendar of upcoming events listed at the top of each eChatter. It is important that we keep current of club, Division (we are in Division 9), Regional (we are in the Mason Dixon Region which is made up of Divisions 9, 12 and 14), and Capital District activities. Let me know of events you would like to keep club members mindful of and I will add it to the above.

Also, I encourage you to read the eBuilder monthly. At least scan through the articles. There are lots of great ideas for service projects as well as for fund raisers. I call your attention, also, to the monthly Governor's message. I will highlight it here each month, so do be sure to take a look at it. This year's Capital District Governor is Tom Ganse. He has some great plans for our Capital District and you need to be aware of the. Read his October message.

Another interesting feature of recent eBuilders, is outgoing District Growth Team Chairman Jack White's audio messages. They are motivational and packed with great club growth info. Here are a couple links to two of the audio messages in this month's eBuilder. There are more in past issues, but here are the two most recent:

We'll kick this year off with the October board meeting which will feature a review of this coming year's porposed budget. Thanks go to Treasurer Debbi Matthews for the hours spent on preparing the budget! In the future, be sure to email me if you have subjects you would like to address during the board meeting and I will put you on the agenda.

VP Mick Hickman is hard at work on the speaker program for this entire year. Do not let her have to do it by herself. Have an interesting speaker in mind? Feel free to coordinate the meeting yourself and let Mick know of the name, organization, and date for your speaker. You can always go to our list of scheduled speakers and pick an open date yourself for your speaker. Let Mick and me know. I will post it to update the online schedule.

Our FSK Mall giftwarp is scheduled for Dec. 5 to Dec. 24. We are in the same location near Penny's. The schedule (mostly empty) has been posted here. Email me with your preferred times.

It's going to be a great year!

Civil War Historians Entertain Club

Civil War historians and authors CW and Rhonda-Lee Whitehead (left with Frank Parker) recently spoke to the club about military and civilian life in the Harpers Ferry area during the Civil War. Growing up in Harpers Ferry and studying at Shepherd College gave CW great insite into the history of the area. Authors of two novels set in the Civil War era, Sabers & Roses as well as Northern Fire, CW and Rhonda-Lee brought copies of their books with them as well as photos of the Harpers Ferry area during the Civil War area which club members enjoyed viewing (right).
