Positive Mental Attitude by
Pres. Bill Muffi
The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick begins its new administrative year. I would like to thank all the members for the opportunity to serve as your new President. My goals for this year are simple:
- Build on what we have.
- Ask each member to bring in one new member this year.
- Keep a positive mental attitude in our club.
We have started with a bang!
- We have one new member.
- We have just completed our first Community Service Project (for the Jeremy Foundation's 5K Race in Mt. Airy - see article below)
The Jeremy Foundation helps families in need when their child gets Cancer. I would like to thank: Dave, Eric, Chris (my wife) and Phil for taking time on Saturday to help with the 5K race. The President of the Jeremy Foundation, Diane Ryan called me on Saturday to thank everyone for their support.
Let’s get to work on... |
Installation of Club Officers
Dignitaries galore graced the Red Carpet at the Elks Lodge on Sept. 29, 2009 to witness the installation of the 2009-2010 officers and directors of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick. Paparazzi crowded near as flash-after-flash lit the rich and famous who came to witness this annual event. Click here to see photos of the gala event! |
Pennies For Peace
by Ryan Muffi

Tuscarora HS Key Club Pres. Ryan Muffi recently advised the club of his Key Club's current project, Pennies for Peace which is an organization that collects pennies, and only pennies. the pennies are spent on building schools and employing teachers in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The reason only pennies are being donated is because things cost a lot less in Pakistan and Afghanistan than here in the US. Pennies For Peace shows that anyone, rich or poor, can make a positive difference in the world, and what a school room costs here can build an entire school over there. Educating children in Pakistan and Afghanistan is very important because everyone deserves an education, and the more knowledge they acquire, the less chance that the people will fall behind an extremist leader. It will also bring more of a balance to girls, because they are often not given the same rights, privileges and opportunities as are the boys in their country. Won't you please donate to our cause? (Pictured above Ryan Muffi accepts a contribution from Past Pres. Dave Maloney.)

New Member Nicholas Brie

Kiwanian Nicholas Brie has transferred his membership to our club. Introduced at last week's meeting, you will learn more about Nicholas in the next edition of the eChatter. Nicholas is sponsored by Frank Parker. Welcome, Nicholas! (Pictured at last week's officer installation are Dave Maloney, Frank Parker, Nicholas Brie). |
Gift Wrap
The FSK Mall is preparing our annual contact to wrap gifts. At this point in time they cannot guarantee the same spot in front of Penny's. Keep your fingers crossed! In the meantime uncross your fingers long enough to start signing up for the gift wrap. Go here. Email Dave Maloney with slots you wish to fill. |
Jeremy Foundation
The Jeremy Foundation provides financial assistance for families whose children are in cancer treatments. Cancer is the number one disease killer of children under the age of 15! On Oct. 3rd the Jeremy Foundation held a 5K race in conjunction with the annual Mt. Airy Days in Mt. Airy, MD. By running this race, participants helped the Foundation raise money to provide gas cards, parking, taxies, food and other expenses incurred that weigh on these families while their child is in the hospital receiving treatments.
Diane Ryan, president and founder of the Jeremy Foundation, contacted the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick to solicit our help in assisting the race operation by directing runners along the proper path as they ran the race. Positioned up and down the stretch of road, club members did an admirable job to ensure all runners made it back to starting line!

Phil Pople, Bill Muffi, Diane Ryan's daughter, Diane, Chris Muffi, Eric Gatrell and Dave Maloney prepare for receiving instructions and taking their positions along the route.

After receiving their instructions from Diane we ended up with a bunch of "Wrong Way" Corrigans!

Registration table.

Finish line.

Runners wait for the final participant to return.

SALT of Frederick County

Judy Hallman, president of the SALT Council, recently addressed our club.
The Frederick SALT council is a volunteer group of Frederick County senior residents and senior advocates that meets monthly with local law enforcement to discuss important issues and to share information. According to Hallman, the organization helps seniors build lines of communication with local law enforcement and helps officers to hear, see and interact with them before a crime occurs.
From the perspective of law enforcement, working with a community’s senior population requires officers to take a different approach. Some seniors may have trouble seeing, hearing or have physical disabilities, Hallman said.
SALT is a national organization with chapters in every county in Maryland, Hallman said, and several participants in Tuesday’s summit were from neighboring councils.
Established in 1993, the Frederick council has held previous community workshops in the spring and fall, Hallman said. Pictured, Judy Hallman shares SALT literature with club member Jim Wiggins. Gazette article about SALT |
