| Jerry's
Words of Wisdom by
Pres. Jerry Jenkins
As
you all know this will be the last of Jerry’s Words
of Wisdom, a misnomer at the very least.
It
has been a good year over all, and I hope you have enjoyed
it as much as I have.
We
have accomplished much, taken care of a lot of Kids and had
a good time doing it. I have a few more suggestions for the
club which I will bring up at the September board meeting
for your consideration. Think about having a standing committee
to award Hixsons and select the Kiwanian of the year. This
committee should also establish minimum requirements for a
person to be awarded these honors thereby making these awards
less of a popularity thing and more an award for accomplishments.
I believe this committee should be five people and one should
be elected each year as a replacement. Just my own thoughts
for your consideration.
We
will be inducting new officers for the coming year on the
29th of September and I hope everyone will attend to welcome
these people who contribute so much to our club.
Although
I have not heard back from Art Riley, I have extended an invitation
to hold his Divisional Council meeting at the same time he
inducts our new officers. I have also extended an invitation
to have him hold induction ceremonies for any other club which
might wish to participate at the same time. If it all comes
off it should be a very large crowd and give all new officers
an opportunity to meet one another.
I
want to thank each and every one of you for your assistance
and cooperation during the past year, including your procedural
assistance from the floor, and I ask that you continue that
cooperation with your incoming officers and board members.
And
a special thanks to Christine Semon and her helpers for such
a wonderful job with this year's club picnic recently help
at Pinehurst Park. Christine did an outstanding job and we
all enjoyed ourselves. Thanks, Christine!
Thanks
again for you cooperation,
Regards,
Jerry

of Frederick Memorial Hospital Courtesy Van Program
"Mac"
McDonald (left) presents a certificate of appreciation to
Clyde Roney in recognition of his service to FMH and the Frederick
community. Club Pres. Jerry Jenkins (right) presents Clyde
with a magnetic Kiwanis logo sign as a remembrance. The sign
had been used on the Courtesy van.
In
2001 the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick, at the initiative
of member Clyde Roney and with the cooperation of Frederick
Memorial Hospital (FMH), established the FMH Kiwanis Club
of Suburban Frederick FMH Courtesy Van Program to transport
patients from FMH to their place of residence. The program
has now come to an end.
The
courtesy van had been manned by Kiwanians to take wheelchair
patients home after their discharge from the hospital. During
the program's period of operation which began in January,
2001, over twelve thousand volunteer-hours have been expended,
and over three thousand patients have been transported. Benefits
of patient transport include the quick opening of beds for
new patients, saving of money formerly paid by the hospital
for commercial (ambulance) transports, and transportation
without cost or worry for either the patient or their family.
At
a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick,
Clyde Roney was recognized by Garland "Mac" McDonald,
Director of Pulmonary Services at FMH, for his initiative
in suggesting and starting the program, and for his years
of dedicated service to making the program such a success.
McDonald also recognized the other Kiwanis volunteer drivers
who participated over the years including Ed Crawford, Mike
Galloway, Jerry Jenkins, Frank Parker, Clyde Roney, Carmi
Sayler, Paul Sheets, Vernon Simmons and Russ Turney. |
Bulgarian
Orphanage and Medical Relief Fund
At
our Sept. 8 meeting, a check will be presented by our club
to the Bulgarian Orphanage and Medical Relief Fund. The contribution
will be made from our club via our Community Foundation Fund.
From
the planned press release: "The Kiwanis Club of Suburban
Frederick Fund, one of over 450 funds held by The Community
Foundation of Frederick County, contributes $2,000 to the
Bulgarian Orphanage and Medical Relief Fund, Inc. The gift
is part of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick’s
ongoing international charitable commitment."
"Imagine
a world where children are shunted away in crumbling orphanages
with too little care and too little to eat. That’s what
was happening until a group of Kiwanians from Hanover, Pennsylvania,
stepped in. Today, the Bulgarian Orphanage and Medical Relief
fund provides vitamins and medicines to 30,000 orphans in
297 orphanages throughout Bulgaria. The result? Deaths have
dropped more than eight percent, saving the lives of thousands
of orphans every year.”
Please
be sure to attend. |
Program
Speakers
 Justin
Klemm and Phyllis Heuerman were well-received program speakers
recently. Justin, a 10-year veteran as professional baseball
umpire told tales from behind the mound. Phyllis Heuerman,
master gardner, gave members summer care tips for both lawn
and garden. (Left, Phyllis Heuerman, Master Gardner. Right,
(L to R) Pres. Jerry Jenkins, Justin Klemm, Phil Pople.)
