Korner by Pres. Ken Dell
Greetings
to all for the final time as your President. It has been an
interesting year to say the least. There are so many “THANK
YOUs” due to so many people for the outstanding job
that they have done. If I miss you it means only that I ran
out of time or memory for this article, not that your efforts
are not appreciated. Dave Maloney has been the communicator/instigator
supreme this year! His efforts with the newsletters, the Foundation,
reminders to us all of various activities and just a general
push to keep us going have been phenomenal! Christine’s
work with all the many “youth” groups/activities
has been very well appreciated not only by our club but also
by all the various kids and their parents. And thanks to her
and her committee for organizing a great club picnic this
year. Thanks, too, to Larry and Judi Fellows for hosting the
picnic at their home. Ed's work with the many children’s
services may not grab a headline, but I guarantee you that
the many kids who benefited from them were glad we were there.
Thanks to Jim Krysiek for his efforts with Circle K and the
other groups he works with. They couldn’t make it without
his guidance. Jim also helped us to remember that we should
go about our days and the many tasks in an honorable and righteous
way, being forgiving and fair to all. We had a different year
in fundraising, but Phil managed to stay the course and we
did come out ahead. He is also working on next year's projects
so please remember to say yes and sign up to give a little
of your time to help. Special thanks to Glen Magaha and Jim
Krysiek for handling the Invocations at our meetings. Also,
Thank You to Leslie and Rob for their diligent efforts in
not only the day-to-day operations of our club but at all
the special events where they were present to perform their
duties and more.
In
general, I want to say thank you to all our members for your
guidance, advice, corrections, etc. to me over this last year.
My company is having a record year which meant me putting
in a lot more time there than anticipated and not having as
much time to give to Kiwanis. I thank everyone for putting
up with me and for your help. I could not have lasted if it
were not for all the dedicated officers, board members and
members. THANK YOU!! I want to leave you with the thought
to remember you are important and your time and talents are
needed by our club. Please sign up to help with projects,
even if you can only sit at a table and take money or tickets
for an hour, we need you. Also, invite potential new members
to a meeting. We can only grow if you ask someone. The sincerest
Good Luck and Thank You to all. |
Kiwanis
Adopts New Motto and Defining Statement
To
help better brand itself, KI recently adopted a new motto
and defining statement. The old motto was "We Build,"
but the new motto is "Serving the Children of the World."
Kiwanis'
new defining statement is "Kiwanis is an international
organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world
one child and one community at a time." Memorize it.
When someone asks "What is Kiwanis?" now you'll
know what to say. |

9 Lt. Gov. Makes Official Visit to Club
Recently
2005-2006 Div. 9 Lt. Gov. Jim Jacobs and his wife, Beth, (shown
here being welcomed by club Pres. Ken Dell) made their official
visit to the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick. A former
mathematics professor and retired FEMA employee, Jim retired
in 1996. LTG Jim noted his aim is two work toward Gov. Yvonne
Holley's goals including membership growth, branding of Kiwanis,
improved diversification and communications, reading and mentoring
of young children. His goals are that all clubs improve their
attendance at District Convention, have their reports in on
time and make their annual gifts to the KI Foundation and
the Cap. Dist. Foundation. Jim's Div. 9 Leadership Directory
can be found here.

Hurricane
Katrina Devastates the Gulf Coast
Charlie
Ford, Executive Director, La.-Miss.-W.Tenn. District
Dear
Friends in Kiwanis,
For now, your thoughts and prayers are essential.
The city of New Orleans and its surrounding areas are a disaster!
I am sitting here in Baton Rouge -- 80 miles away -- listening
to radio reports coming out of New Orleans -- it is very depressing!
The water is still rising in the city -- it's actually getting
worse down there by the minute -- a day later!! Kenner (the
airport area), Metairie, the lakefront -- all of that area
has been underwater since yesterday. Gas leaks are causing
fires around the city. The citizens were under mandatory evacuation
before the storm -- those who remained in the city, are now
being told to leave. Sections of the Interstate 10 between
New Orleans and the Gulf Coast have been knocked down. The
24-mile causeway across Lake Pontchartrain has sustained severe
damage. The peninsula south of New Orleans is underwater --
the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico now meet just
south of New Orleans! According to the reports on the radio,
that area may never exist again.
I've heard that the entire state of Mississippi is without
power -- I have not been able to make contact with Governor
Woody or Governor-Elect Dennis Oliver yet. I imagine Woody
is in Jackson, Miss., with their daughter. I'm trying to track
down Dennis now. The Mississippi Gulf Coast suffered severe
damage. It will take some time for that area to be repaired.
One county alone in Mississippi is reporting over 80 deaths.
If you are concerned about your friends down here: Trustee
Lenny and Cathy made it up to Natchitoches and are staying
with Nettles and Glenelle. Past Governor Jay Vallelungo and
Fran are in Dallas with their daughter. I haven't heard from
any of the other Past Governors down in New Orleans -- hopefully
everyone is safe.
Obviously the southeastern part of Louisiana and all of Mississippi
have suffered severe damage. These areas will need to be rebuilt,
and will need assistance. The authorities are trying to assess
the damaged areas now.
For those of you interested in me and my family -- Baton Rouge
suffered very minor damage, as compared to the other areas.
A number of trees are down, electricity is out all over town,
but that is only a small incontinence as compared to the other
areas. As you can see, the District Office has power and we
are safe and secure. As for now, we are concerned about all
our friends from the rest of the District. They are the ones
who need your thoughts now -- and your support soon, as they
are allowed back to their homes.
I thought you would want to hear about what was going on down
here.
I've never seen anything like this before! Please keep all
of your friends for our District in your thoughts and prayers.

KI
Foundation Takes Action to Aid Hurricane Victims
Ralph
E. Wilson, Jr., President, Kiwanis International Foundation
Your
International Kiwanis Foundation has again been called upon
to aid in disaster relief. Hurricane Katrina has destroyed
many homes and businesses in the Unites States Gulf Coast.
The Kiwanis International Foundation Disaster Relief Fund
will be utilized to aid children affected by the devastating
hurricane.
The
Foundation, working through the districts and clubs within
the affected areas, ensures that contributions will be directed
to children with the most immediate and critical needs.
Many
of the concerned ask if there is anything they can do to help.
Contributions are being accepted. Please send your support
to the Kiwanis International Foundation Disaster Relief Fund,
3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA 46268 or online.
Our
thoughts are with the countless individuals suffering because
of this natural disaster. Please join us in serving children
who are truly the most innocent victims of severe tragedies. |
