Dave's
Corner by
Pres. Dave Maloney
As my administrative year comes to a close, I want to express my appreciation to the Board and membership not only for their community service but also for their positive and pleasant attitudes which makes for an agreeable atmosphere which better enables us to grow and improve our service to others. While serving as President, it has become abundantly clear that much still needs to be done within our growing community. While this past year has seen an uptick in our service projects, we still need to focus on club growth so that we can do more. When it comes to service, not only do we need more worker bees, we also need to have more time together to analyze our community's needs and to plan new service activities. Just a thought - do we really need a speaker program every week? It seems that we have little opportunity to talk about additional service projects and even less time to plan those that might be adopted. Might we free up one meeting per month to focus on service?
At this past week's Dover, DE District Convention, nearly 500 Kiwanians gathered to share information and their Kiwanis experiences. Our club was represented by Christine, Ellis and myself. Topics ranged from club growth to helping poor kids in Honduras to the importance of investing in the first 5 years of a child's life. Did you know that the infant brain forms 700 neural connections per second and that by 5 years of age it has gained 85% of its adult weight? Sadly, this is reflected in the statistic that of 50 first graders having problems reading, 44 of them will still have reading problems in the fourth grade! Check out how we can help at www.PartnershipforSuccess.org. We had African dancers, great food and even an ice cream social, but when it came time roll-up our sleeves to share and learn, Kiwanians mean business, and I was proud to see the effort these folks make in order to cause positive impacts in their communities.
As the new administrative year approaches, I must say we are all excited to have Bill Muffi and his team take the reigns. Bill is a dynamic and excited guy who is fortunate to have all of you to help him out. I look forward to joining you in doing whatever we can to make Bill's year a huge success. And along the way, lets make a difference in our community and have fun doing it!
P.S. Regarding next administrative year, Pres. elect Bill has asked Treasurer Debbi to provide each committee chair with the current budget. Each chair needs to review the budget and provide their budget requests for the upcoming year back to Debbi ASAP so that she and Bill can begin to finalize the proposed budget for Board approval at the Oct. board meeting.
P.P.S. MaryMargaret O'Neill and her organization, Kids are Heroes, are having a "Kids are Heroes" Day at FSK Mall Oct. 24th from 10-4. Kids from around the country will be attending. |
What I Learned at DCON
Here are some of the issues that were discussed at DCON at the sessions I attended. There is much food for thought.
- Make use of Club Growth materials available from KI
- Make use of brief "elevator speech" when approaching prospective member
- Make liberal use of club brochure
- Corporate Membership - reserved for a company. No new member add fee if representative is replaced.
- Satellite clubs for those who want to be involved but cannot join a club. Act as a standing committee with own chairman. Could be group of teachers. SLP alums. Young professional group. FCC 18 year olds. SLP parents. Project recipients. Get away from meal charge.
- Company based clubs. May offer greater convenience to its members. Flat annual club fee. Still being developed.
- Ask family members, spouses, children.
- Recruit the Manager of Walmart!
- Make liberal use of Honorary Members. They can become full time members.
- Orient new members. Explain what club does.
- Get new members immediately involved.
- Have active House Committee
- Put new members on House Committee for 2 months as a greeter at meetings.
- New members are enthusiastic. New members bring in new members.
- Young people have different mind set than older generations. All are now online.
- Make effective use of technology: Facebook, Twitter
- Post upcoming meetings and service projects on Craigslist.com. (Place ad evening of program or day before. Post on Sat. for weekend projects.)
- For young people reduce dues, increase socialization, increase service.
- Maybe eliminate one speaker program a month to concentrate on service projects?
- Community analysis: Do it. Times have changed. Needs have changed. Contact United Way, what are Key Clubber needs? Churches? Chamber of Commerce? Newspapers? What needs are not being met?: school supplies, food, medical clinics, health, safety, YMCA Back Pack program, Shop-With-a-Cop in Sep for school and Christmas for needy kids.
- HIGH IMPACT SERVICE
- How do members feel about current service projects? Getting tired of them? Are they still needed?
- Participate in Kiwanis One Day
- Partner with Volunteer Frederick
- Have SLP speak to our club regularly
- Does project cause Goodwill? Bring in new members? Get PR for the Club?
- Have large KIWANIS signs when conducting service projects
- Clubs should have a signature project. Do every year.
- Non walkathon!
- Do service projects at a regularly scheduled (non-speaker) meeting
- Want high-impact/low-cost projects. Minimize low-cost/low-impact projects.
- BUGS, Terrific Kids and Key Clubs are examples of high-impact/low-cost projects.
- HI IMPACT MEETINGS
- Meetings give first impression -is it good of bad?
- Bad meetings will sour would-be members faster than bad service projects
- Invite SLP but do not let them sit by themselves.
- Are guests made to feel welcome?
- Every member stays standing until meeting begins to facilitate meeting guests.
- Every member greets and welcomes all guests. Engage them in conversation.
- Do not be like the old geezers at some clubs who get angry if their favorite seat is taken by someone else.
- Be respectful of speakers by not talking or conducting club business during their presentations.
- Do not leave during a speaker program.
- Start and stop meetings on time.

Citizen Contributes to Kiwanis
The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick was pleased to have recently received a contribution of $200 from Frederick resident, Candy Moroz. "I had heard about the good works done by Kiwanis from my neighbor, Kiwanian Bill Muffi," said Moroz. "I felt compelled to contribute in order to support their projects that focus on needy children," she continued. Pictured L to R, Bill Muffi accepts the donation from Candy Moroz.

Chamber of Commerce Spokesperson
Lori Friedman, Membership Director of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, recently visited the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick in order to explain the many services and benefits available to Chamber members. "The Chamber of Commerce is a member-driven, member-supported organization dedicated to expanding the local economy and improving the quality of life in the greater Frederick region," said Ms. Friedman. The club had recently joined the Chamber, and members were excited to hear of the many benefits of belonging. Pictured, club liaison with the Chamber, Frank Parker, is presented with the club's Chamber of Commerce membership sign by Ms. Friedman.
