Mick's Corner by Pres. Mick Hickman

Well, people, this is my last eChatter article.  I've got two things to say: One is "whew, no more articles to write" and the most important is a big 'THANK YOU' for allowing me to be your president and for your support throughout the year.  We've had a pretty good year.  We've accomplished a lot.  We've had some huge challenges, primarily the ecomony, to overcome in order to do what we wanted to do, but we did.  Our club has always taken great pride in overcoming anything to accomplish our end goal.  No matter what.

I know Eric will be a great successor to the chair.  His devotion to Kiwanis is obvious and his brain never shuts off.  By that I mean he's always coming up with some great ideas. I can't wait to see what he's going to bring to the table this coming year.

Please don't forget to come to the meeting on September 27.  It's officer Installation Night as well as a bring-a-guest night.  I'd really like to see all members with their partners there if at all possible.  Or just bring a guest you may think of as a potential member.  It's not going to be a night full of long boring speeches; it's going to be a night of celebration.  Again, thank you, ladies and gents.  It's been great fun!

Its a Strasburg Railroad Steam Passenger Car set and I think you will all be pleased. We got a nice discount from Debbi at Hobbytown and she also threw in some money for a gift card. Thanks go out to Phil and Eric and for setting up the meeting with Hobbytown and to Debbi for being there with a check in hand to pay for it all. - Joe

Donation:  $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00
Drawing Date: Friday, December 23rd

Ellis Honored for Service

Our club member Ellis Stroup has retired after over 36 years as Sec/Treas of the Capital District of Kiwanis International. The nearly 7000 members of the Capital District have honored Ellis with a Lifetime Membership in the Capital District as well as by declare Ellis Capital District Secretary/Treasurer Emeritus. Pictured (L to R) club member Dave Maloney presents Ellis with his plaque at a recent meeting of our fellow club, the Kiwanis Club of Frederick.

(Above) Our club joined with the downtown club recently to insert a full-page salute to Ellis in the 2011 Williamsburg DCON program in recognition of his years of service to the Capital District.

2011 Williamsburg Capial District Convention a Success!

Check out the DCON coverage in this month's eBuilder! There's even a photo album which, while not quite like actually being there, will give you a pretty good idea of everything that went on. The eBuilder introduces you to our new Governor, Jeffrey Wolff, and to our new ELIMINATE project—a joint undertaking in partnership with UNICEF that has as its goal the eradication of maternal and neonatal tetanus worldwide.

Larry to Host Annual Club Picnic

"Bring Lawn Chairs," says Larry Fellows to club members attending our annual club picnic at Larry's riverfront home in WV. Directions. Looks like Larry has a nice place, so be sure to join us! Everyone is to bring something. Contact Debbi if you are wondering what it is that you are supposed to bring.

Hot Air Balloon Lands During Club Meeting

A recent club meeting had more excitement than usual. "There's a balloon out there!" a member exclaimed. Sure, sure, I thought. Some little kid's party balloon escaped and was bouncing along the parking lot at the Elk's Lodge where meet. To our surprise, though, it was a hot air balloon! You know, the BIG kind! It slowly lowered itself onto a grassy area where a chase truck towing a white trailer soon arrived. Collapsing on its site and folded up, the balloon was soon tucked safely in the trailer as Frederick's finest (Police as well as Kiwanians!) looked on.

UMUC Data Mining Specialist Visits Club

University of Maryland University College Data Mining Specialist, Stephen Penn, recently visited a meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick to discuss steps being taken at UMUC to better understand issues related to the success of adult learners. Pictured (L to R), club member Robert Wilson presents Penn with a child's book as a "Thank You" gift.  The book, part of the club's Read Around the World program, is to be donated to the C. Burr Artz Public Library in the name of Penn and UMUC.

Club Learns about Mission of Mercy

Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Treasurer Debbi Matthews presents a book as a "Thank You" gift to Mission of Mercy Associate Director Denice Brooks-Cutt in thanks for Ms. Brooks-Cutt’s report on her group’s work at a recent club meeting. Drawing on volunteer doctors, dentists and nurses who staff seven clinics throughout Maryland and southern Pennsylvania, Mission of Mercy provides free medical, dental, and prescription fulfillment to residents in Frederick county and other parts of the region who are unemployed, homeless, or who work but cannot afford healthcare and thus fall through the cracks of the medical and dental healthcare system. The book, part of the club's Read Around the World program, is to be donated to the C. Burr Artz Public Library in the name of Brooks-Cutt and the Mission of Mercy.

Club Donates to 4-H Therapeutic Riding Program

The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick is proud to support the Frederick County 4H Therapeutic Riding Program. "The mission of the program is to provide a recreational experience and therapeutic regimen to Frederick County citizens with medically certified mental, physical and emotional disabilities, through appropriate equestrian activities," said Cia Martin, the program's volunteer coordinator. Pictured, club member Joe Vitanza presents a club donation of $400 to Martin. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to helping children and the less fortunate.
