“Penguins and Polar Bears” was the topic at a
recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick. Presenting a slide
show of his trips to the Arctic and Antarctic aboard Coast Guard icebreakers,
club member and former Coastie Dave Maloney explained the operations and
missions of the Coast Guard while in the polar regions. Special initiations are
conducted aboard ship for sailors crossing the Arctic Circle for the first time.
