McQuin
speaks about childhood cancer
FOR THE FREDERICK NEWS-POST
At a
recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Surburban Frederick, Beth McQuin, a
volunteer with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, explanied to members that few
parents think about childhood cancer unless their child has the disease. She and
her husband, Bob, found themselves in exactly that position 20 years ago when
their son, Bobby, was diagnosed with the illness and spent six years going
through treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, receiving a bone marrow
transplant from one of his six brothers. St. Baldricks, founded in 1999, is the
largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research.
Thousands of volunteers shave their heads in solidarity with children fighting
cancer, requesting donations of support from friends and families.
