Kiwanians support law enforcement careers
through their Community Foundation fund

Community Foundation Trustee Ann Burnside Love joins Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick President Ken Dell in presenting a $1,200 check from The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Fund to Captain Gary Morton, Special Operations Commander/Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, and Det. Richard Sherbert, Ft. Detrick Police Department, for Frederick County Law Enforcement Explorer Post #1218.

Frederick, Maryland; March 30, 2005: The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Fund, one of over 460 funds held by The Community Foundation of Frederick County, contributes $1,200 to Frederick County Law Enforcement Explorer Post #1218 during a March 23rd meeting. Frederick County Law Enforcement Explorer Post #1218, sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, is a career-oriented program that provides young men and women 14 to 21 years of age with the opportunity to "explore" careers in criminal justice and law enforcement through hands-on training, activities, competitions, and classroom lectures. Since Explorer Post #1218 began in 1983, twelve participants pursued law enforcement careers and one entered the fire and rescue field. The program is chartered though the Frederick County Sheriff's Office and supported by the Fort Detrick and Thurmont police departments.

“The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick remains dedicated to the children and young people of Frederick County. Our contribution to Frederick County Law Enforcement Explorer Post #1218 through the fund we hold at the Community Foundation is certainly a way to help these youngsters think about and actually pursue careers in professions that are so critical to maintaining and protecting Frederick County’s quality of life for us all to enjoy,” states Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick President Ken Dell. As a donor-advised fund, The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Fund allows the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick to recommend which charitable activities to support, subject to approval by the Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Since the fund’s creation in 2003, disbursements have provided life-saving medicines and vitamins to about 30,000 children in Bulgarian orphanages through the Bulgarian Orphanage and Medical Relief Fund, Inc. and assisted with tsunami disaster relief efforts in south Asia through the Kiwanis International Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund. This latest disbursement to Frederick County Law Enforcement Explorer Post #1218 helps develop future professionals in law enforcement and related fields. To make future charitable contributions possible, the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick is hosting an art and sports memorabilia auction on April 30, 2005, proceeds from which benefit The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Fund. For more information about the auction or to purchase tickets, contact Kiwanian Dave Maloney at 301.228.2279.
