Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Fund Grows by $5,000 

Frederick, Maryland; September 28, 2004: Mark Gaver, President of GTI Federal and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick, contributed $5,000 to The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Fund, one of over 450 funds held by The Community Foundation of Frederick County. Mr. Gaver made the gift in memory of Russell D. Turney, Sr., who passed away on September 12, 2004 at the age of 57. Mr. Turney was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick, serving as past president and current District Lt. Governor Elect, and a 25 year employee of the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office, serving as Chief Investigator. 

"Russ Turney was a giving person who was always there to help those in need. This gift honors his spirit of humanity by establishing funds that will assist those in the Frederick community in the name of Russell D. Turney, Sr.," shares Mr. Gaver. In accordance with the Turney family’s wishes, Mr. Gaver asked that the contribution be used to benefit those in Frederick County seeking an education in the field of criminal justice.

The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick turned to the Community Foundation to establish The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick Fund as a donor-advised fund. This allows The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick to recommend where the fund’s charitable disbursements might be directed in carrying out the service club’s charitable activities, particularly those relating to children and senior citizens in Frederick County. The flexibility of its donor-advised fund allows the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick to stipulate that Mr. Gaver’s gift be used toward scholarships for Frederick County students studying criminal justice as a way to honor Mr. Turney’s memory.
